Abstract

An acoustic and thermal insulating material for buildings comprises exterior surfaces which are made up of a continuous layer (1, l') containing aluminium, hot-welded on the external surface of a sheet (2, 2') of film of synthetic material containing bubbles. The material also comprises, interposed between the internal surfaces of the sheets (2, 2') of bubble film, at least one layer (3) of foam rendered fire-retardant, made of synthetic material and joined to the sheets (2, 2') of bubble film solely by longitudinal welding lines (4, 4', 4") rendering the longitudinal peripheral edges an integral whole and an essentially median zone of the various thicknesses of the insulating material so as to provide, between the internal surfaces of the bubble films (2, 2') and the foam layer (3), sheets of air (5, 5').

Description

Acoustic and thermal insulating material The present invention relates to a fire-retardant thermal and acoustic insulating material, in particular for the insulation of buildings.
It relates more particularly to a thermal and acoustic insulating material based on films containing air bubbles.
The acoustic and thermal insulating materials produced from sheets of films containing air bubbles have now been described in the literature. Thus, a flame-resistant insulating covering consisting of two sheets of film containing air bubbles covered by a non-flammable material and assembled together by stitching or spot welding around the periphery of the covering and the insertion of rivets over the remainder of the surface is known from the patent US-A 4 038 447. The disadvantage of such a covering is the fact that there are some air passages within the covering which make it impossible to obtain satisfactory assurances of safety in respect of flame.
French Patent No. 2 616 377, which is an improvement of the US Patent, has proposed thermic welding of the edges of the covering instead of stitching around the periphery of the films and the insertion of rivets on the surface, the value being in avoiding stitching of the two sheets making up the product. However, this single solution has not proved satisfactory from the acoustic standpoint. Similarly, from the thermal standpoint it has proved necessary to envisage improvements to the insulation characteristics of such an insulating material.
Another solution has therefore been proposed in the context of the patent EP-A 0 718 447. In this document the insulating material comprises an assembly formed from at least two films of synthetic material enclosing air bubbles rendered uniformly integral at one of their respective face by a heating process trapping a layer of polyethylene foam between each of the said films. Here again, the acoustic and thermal insulation characteristics have proved inadequate during tests.
One aim of the present invention is to propose an acoustic and thermal insulating material the design of which makes it possible, by means of a different assembly of the elements from which it is made up, simply to improve the acoustic and thermal insulation properties of such an insulating material.
To this end, the subject of the invention is an acoustic and thermal insulating material in the form of sheets, in particular for the building sector, the external surfaces of said insulating material being made up of a continuous layer containing aluminium, hot-welded on the external surface of a sheet of film of synthetic material containing bubbles, characterised in that the said insulating material also comprises, interposed between the internal surfaces of the sheets of bubble film, at least one layer of foam rendered fire-retardant, made of synthetic material and joined to the sheets of bubble film solely by longitudinal welding lines rendering the longitudinal peripheral edges an integral whole and an essentially median zone of the various thicknesses of the insulating material so as to provide, between the internal surfaces of the bubble films and the foam layer, sheets of air improving the thermal and acoustic properties of the said insulating material.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the layer of foam rendered fire-retardant and made of synthetic material is a polyethylene foam having a thickness within the range [1.5-4.5] mm.
The invention will be well understood on reading the following description of illustrative embodiments, with reference to the single figure which shows a diagrammatic cross-sectional view of a preferred embodiment of a fireretardant thermal and acoustic insulating material according to the invention, the thickness dimensions being exaggerated and not in accordance with reality for greater clarity.
According to the invention the insulating material principally comprises two films 2,2'of synthetic material containing bubbles, in particular air bubbles, generally regularly distributed but optionally of different density. Each of the external surfaces of the bubble films 2,2'forming the insulating material is covered by a protective covering 1 made up of a continuous layer 1,1'containing aluminium. Said continuous layer 1,1'is, each time, welded to the external surface of the sheet 2,2'of bubble film.
The sheets 2,2'of bubble film are generally sheets of bubble film made of low-density polyethylene having a thickness of the order of 4 mm, a gram weight per square metre of, for example, 138 g/m2 and containing bubbles having a diameter of 10 mm. Said films 2,2'are rendered fire-retardant by means of a treatment based on, for example, chlorine-containing paraffin product and antimony trioxide. The production of such a film will not be described in this document, this description having already been given in the document EP-A 0 717447 and FR A 2 616 377, the relevant contents of the description of which can be incorporated in the present patent application.
The continuous layer 1,1'containing aluminium is, for its part, made up of an aluminium coating applied to a polyethylene coating which is welded to the layer 2,2'of synthetic material containing bubbles. In general said continuous layer 1,1'containing aluminium has a thickness within the range of [12-30] microns. Said layer 1,1'makes it possible to provide a barrier to cold and to return the heat emitted from the interior of rooms in winter. It also reflects solar radiation back towards the outside in summer. Here again the combination and the welding of said continuous layer 1,1' containing aluminium on the sheet 2,2'of film containing air bubbles will not be described since it has already been described in the documents EP-A 0 717 447 and FR-A 2 616 377 already mentioned above.
In a manner characteristic of the invention, a layer of foam rendered fire-retardant and made of synthetic material, preferably a polyethylene layer rendered fire-retardant, represented by 3 in the figures, is interposed between the internal surfaces of the sheets 2,2'of film containing air bubbles. Said layer 3, which has a thickness within the range of [1.5-4.5] mm, has a density of the order of 24 kg/m2. This layer makes it possible to form two supplementary sheets of air 5 and 5'in order to prevent conduction between the two surfaces 1 and 1'. Said foam layer 3 is joined to the sheets 2,2'of film containing bubbles of air by means of thermic welds shown by 4,4'and 4". Said thermic welds make it possible, on the one hand, to make the various thicknesses of the insulating material integral with one another and, furthermore, to render the various layers tight. Said thermic welds are welds in the form of longitudinal lines which enable the longitudinal peripheral edges of the said insulating material to be rendered an integral whole and also welding of the essentially median longitudinal portion of the said insulating material. Onceall of the thicknesses of the layers making up the insulating material have been assembled, the thickness after making up the said insulating material is within the range [8-12] mm. The weight is of the order of 555.4 g/m2 and the density of the order of 55.5 kg/m2. The external colour of such an insulating material is a silver colour with a bright appearance.
