Abstract
A flap 17,18 and 19 for a pivoting shower door 1. The flap pivots from a vertical position, when the door is shut, to a horizontal position, when the door is open. The upper surface of the flap is adapted to receive water drips when the flap is horizontal and allow them to drain away when the flap is vertical. So when the door is open the flap is horizontal and prevents water from dripping on the floor but when the door is closed the flap tips to the vertical and allows any water collected to drain into the shower tray.
Description
A flap for engagement
with a shower door
The present invention relates to a flap for engagement with a shower door. More particularly, but not exclusively, the present invention relates to a flap for engagement with a shower door adapted to pivot between horizontal and vertical configurations and to cover, at least partially, the gap between the shower door and shower door frame when the flap is in the vertical configuration.
Gutters which extend along the lower edge of a shower door are well known. Such gutters are adapted to catch water which runs down the inner face of the shower door. This prevents water from dripping onto the floor outside the shower when the shower door is open.
However, such gutters tend to remain full of dirty water after the shower has been used. This water will remain in the gutter until the next time the shower is used. The presence of such dirty water encourages the growth of mould and bacteria which can be unhygienic.
Such gutters are also difficult to clean.
Accordingly, in a first aspect, the present invention provides a flap for engagement with a shower door, the shower door being adapted to pivot between open and closed positions with respect to a shower door frame,
the flap comprising
a hinged portion for engagement with the shower door and a flap portion extending therefrom;
the flap portion being adapted to pivot with respect to said shower door under gravity to a substantially vertical configuration when the door is in the closed position and being adapted such that on opening the shower door the flap portion abuts against the shower door frame so urging the flap portion from the substantially vertical to a substantially horizontal configuration;
the flap portion comprising an upper surface being adapted in use to receive water which drips from the shower door when the flap is in the substantially horizontal configuration and to allow water to drain therefrom when the flap is in the substantially vertical configuration.
The flap according to the invention has the advantage that it prevents water dripping from the shower door onto the floor outside the shower tray when the shower door is open but when the door is closed it tips to the vertical configuration so enabling any water collected by the flap to drain into the shower tray. This ensures that dirty water is not allowed to . remain in the gutter in the periods between use of the shower.
The flap according to the invention also has the advantage that as it can be pivoted between horizontal and vertical configurations it is relatively easy to clean.
When using a power shower water tends to bounce off the shower tray and walls and through the gap between the door and door frame. Preferably, the flap of the invention is adapted such that when the shower door is closed the flap at least partially covers the gap between the shower door and shower door frame. This prevents water from escaping from the shower cubicle when the shower is in use.
Preferably, the upper surface of the flap of the invention is
U shaped in cross section. Such an upper surface is relatively simple to manufacture and to clean.
Preferably, the hinged portion comprises at least one aperture for engagement with a corresponding protrusion extending from the shower door. Such a combination of aperture and protrusion provides a simple and reliable hinge mechanism.
Preferably the flap comprises a planar base adapted to abut against the shower door frame on opening the flap from the vertical to horizontal configuration. Such a planar base ensures that the flap pivots smoothly from the horizontal configuration to the vertical configuration as the shower door is closed.
Preferably the flap portion further comprises a brush extending from the base thereof, the brush being adapted to -abut against the shower door frame on opening the shower door so pivoting the shower flap from the vertical to the horizontal configuration.
Preferably, the flap of the invention is manufactured from an extrudable rigid material. The extrudable rigid material can be a metal.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a combination of shower door and shower door frame, the shower door being adapted to pivot between open and closed positions with respect to the shower door frame,
the shower door comprising a flap engaged with an edge thereof
the flap comprising
a hinged portion interengaged with an edge of the shower door and a flap portion extending therefrom;
the flap portion being adapted to pivot with respect to said shower door under gravity to a substantially vertical configuration when the shower door is in the closed position and being adapted such that on opening the shower door the flap portion abuts against an actuation surface of the shower door frame so urging the flap portion from the substantially vertical configuration to a substantially horizontal configuration;
the flap portion comprising an upper surface being adapted in use to receive water which drips from the shower door when the flap is in the substantially horizontal configuration and to allow water to drain therefrom when the flap is in the substantially vertical configuration.
The invention will now be described by way of example only, and not in any limitative sense, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 8 is a cross sectional view of the flap according to thr further aspect of the invention in a horizontal configuration.
Figure 9 is a perspective view of a male pivot moulding for use with the flap according to the further aspect of the invention.
. Shown in figure 1 is a shower door 1 and shower door frame 2 both in cross section. Attached to the shower door frame 2 by connecting screws 3 is a male pivot moulding 4. The male pivot moulding 4 comprises a main body 5 having apertures 6, 7 through which the connecting screws pass. Extending from the upper edge of the main body 5, coplanar with the upper
face 8 of the door frame 2, is an upper plate 9. The upper plate 9 is supported by support arm 10. Located within the upper surface of the support plate 9 is a recess 11 into which a pivot pin 12 is inserted in use. When inserted in the recess the pivot pin 12 extends upwardly from the plate 9 and is free to pivot within the recess 11.
Connected to the lower edge of the shower door 1 is a support moulding 13. Extending downwardly from the support moulding 13 is a female pivot moulding 14 which comprises an aperture (not shown) adapted to receive the pivot pin 12. In use, the shower door 1 pivots about the pivot pin 12 and female pivot moulding 13.
The support moulding 12 comprises a curved recess 15 on its underside. Located within the recess 15 is a flap 16 adapted to pivot between substantially vertical and substantially horizontal configurations. The flap 16 is generally U-shaped in cross section having a planar base 17 and two side walls 18,19 extending therefrom. The outer face of the side wall 19 proximate to the recess 15 is shaped to be complimentary to the shape of the recess. At one end of the flap is an end wall 20 which extends between the side walls 18,19 to form a gutter like flap upper surface. The other end of the upper surface is open to allow water to drain away in use as described below.
Located in each end of the base 17 is an aperture 21.
Extrusions from the support moulding (not shown) interengage with these apertures 21 to form a hinge about which the flap 16 pivots between horizontal and vertical configurations.
The shower door 1 is shown in the closed configuration. In this configuration the flap 16 hangs substantially vertically downwards from the support moulding 12. When hanging downwards the flap 16 covers the gap between the shower door 1 and the shower door frame 2 so preventing the escape of water through this gap when the shower is in use.
In addition, the upper surface of the flap 16 is arranged such that when the flap 16 is in the vertical configuration any water within the upper surface drains from the upper surface and into the shower tray.
As the shower door 1 pivots towards the open configuration the base 17 of the flap 16 abuts against an actuation surface 22 of the male pivot moulding 4. As the shower door is opened further the flap is pivoted by this actuation surface 22 from the vertical to the horizontal configuration.
The flap 16 is shown the horizontal configuration in figure 2. The gutter like upper surface is adapted such that when the flap 16 is in this configuration it catches water which drips down the inner surface of the open shower door 1. This prevents this water from dripping on to the floor outside of the shower tray. The flap 16 is shaped such that once water is caught by the upper surface it flows towards the open end of the flap 16 from where it drains into the shower tray.
Shown in figure 3 is the shower door 1 and shower door frame 2 from above in cross section. The shower door 1 is maintained in the closed position by magnets 23,24 on the side of the shower door frame 2. The pivot axis of the shower door 1 is parallel to but displaced from, the plane of the shower door frame 2. This ensures that when the shower door 1 is closed it is slightly offset from the shower door frame 2 so enabling the flap 16 to hang vertically downwards as described above.
Shown in figure 4 is a perspective view of the flap 16 in the horizontal configuration. As can be seen one end 25 of the flap 16 is open enabling water to drain from the upper surface flap 16 into the shower tray when the door is open.
The male pivot moulding 4 is shown in detail in figure 5. The male pivot moulding 4 comprises a main body 5 and an upper plate 9. Extending through the body 5 are apertures 6,7.
In order to connect the pivot moulding 4 to the shower door frame 2 screws (not shown) are passed through these apertures 6,7, and into threaded recesses (not shown) in the shower door frame 2. Located within the horizontal upper plate 9 is the pivot recess 11 into which the pivot pin 12 is inserted.
Extending upwardly from the upper plate 9 is a sloped actuation surface 26.
The shower door 1 is shown in the open position in figure 6.
The male pivot moulding 4 is located part way along the bottom (and top) edge of the shower door 1. When the shower door 1 is opened both vertical sides of the shower door move with respect to the shower door frame 2 as shown. This makes both faces of the shower door 1 relatively simple to clean.
Shown in cross section in figure 7 is a flap 16 according to a further embodiment of the invention. The flap 16 is similar to the flap as shown in figure 1 however a brush 27 extends from the flap base 17.
When hanging in the vertical configuration the brush 27 abuts against the shower door frame 2 so forming a seal between shower door frame 2 and flap 16. This seal prevents the escape of water from between shower door 1 and shower door frame 2 when the shower is in use.
When the shower door 2 is opened the brush 27 is pressed into contact with the actuation surface 28 of the male pivot moulding 4 so pivoting the flap 16 from the vertical configuration to the horizontal configuration. The flap 16 is shown in the horizontal configuration in figure 8.
Shown in figure 9 is a male pivot moulding 4 for use with the flap 16 according to the further aspect of the invention.
The pivot moulding 4 comprises a main body 5 having two apertures 6,7 through which screws are passed to connect the moulding 4 to the shower door frame 2. The upper surface of the body 5 comprises a smoothly curved actuation surface 20.
As the shower door is opened the brush 27 abuts against the actuation surface 28 so pivoting the flap 16 from the vertical to horizontal configurations.
Extending upwards from the body 5 is a support post 29.
Located in the upper surface 30 of the support post 28 is the pivot recess 11 adapted to receive a pivot pin 12 as previously described.
Typically the flap 16 is made from an extrudable rigid material, preferably a metal.
In an alternative embodiment the upper surface of the flap 16 is semicircular in cross section.
