Description

1 2339895 A PORTABLE TEMPERATURE-CONTROLLED COMPARTMENT FOR AUTOMATED
GUIDED VEHICLES This invention relates to a portable temperaturecontrolled compartment for use with Automated Guided vehicles.
Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) systems have been widely applied in many areas of industry, especially in assembly and manufacturing operations. For ultraprecision manufacturing systems, stable temperature conditions are desirable. Current AGV systems, however, do not include facilities which provide precise temperature-controlled compartments. it has been observed that long waiting times are required for, soaking, at a specific controlled temperature (eg.20C) of components which have been subjected to changing temperature conditions over the period of transportation. This situation can become a bottleneck 2 when implementing modern manufacturing systems such as 'just-in-time (JIT), and flexible computer- integrated manufacturing (CIM) systems.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a portable temperaturecontrolled compartment for AGV systems. This new device incorporates the following features:- (1)A heating module using heater-mats with a two-stage control (one booster and one fine-tuning heating module) The heater-mats are operated on a d.c. power-supply. A temperature- sensing switch has also been provided for protecting this apparatus from damage due to overheating.
(2)The cooling module, that is comprised of a pair of Peltier-effect Heatpumps, is used for controlling the temperature of the transportation compartment. Each Peltier-effect Heat-pump module consists of: a semiconductor-thermoelectric device, an aluminium %finned, heat-sink and an electric fan which can extract accumulated heat from the compartment of the AGV systems.
3 (3)A closed-loop temperature control module is designed to be operated on a d.c. power-supply. The temperature controller used is an ultra-compact PID digital temperature controller that provides for proportional, Integral and Differential control strategies. Solid State Relays (SSR's) have also been used in this control module as a power control interface.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings. The unit consists of an insulated compartment 10 and control module 50 as can be seen in Figure 1. Referring to the schematic diagram (Figure 2) the temperaturecontrolled compartment comprises a thermally- insulated container 10, a d.c. rechargeable power-supply unit 20, a pair of Peltier-effect heat-pumps 31&32, and a closed-loop control module 50. In the container 10, two sets of heating-modules are provided:- one (i.e. the fine-tuning heating module 41) is fitted to the underside of the cover, the other (i.e. the Booster Heating-module 42) is laid on the container floor.
4 A temperature sensor 52 (for instance, a PT100 platinum resistance) is fitted near to the fine-tuned heating module 41. This measures the temperature inside the transportation compartment. This temperature sensor is connected to a digital temperature controller 53, which provides many advanced control options. In addition to the PID (proportional, Integral and Differential) control, a special function of 'zero and span adjustment' allows the calibration of the temperature measurement to be easily carried out.
Once the components to be transported by an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) are loaded into the compartment, the control module continuously monitors the temperature inside the compartment and also the ambient temperature. By using the pre-set conditions (such as the desired temperature, cycle time and approach rate), and by comparing the temperature inside the compartment to the ambient temperature, the digital temperature controller 53 produces switching signals to control both the heat-pump cooling module (31&32) and the heating-module (41&42) through the power control interface 54. Solid State Relays (SSR's) are used in the power control module to ensure higher reliability.
The thermally- insulated container 10, which holds all the modules (such as heating, cooling and control modules), provides a working volume for the components which are to be transported by the AGV systems. In order to provide this temperature-controlled compartment with higher 'portability', all of the modules (ie. heating, cooling and control module) have been designed to be operated from a d.c. (e.g. 12 volts) power-supply. A compact (about 5 Kgs) d.c. rechargeable power-supply unit 20 is fitted for this purpose. Once this portable temperature-controlled compartment has been moved into an AGV system, the power required can be provided by the AGV system itself through a adaptor in the control-module 50.
