Abstract

Video cameras 3, 4 and 5 are secured to a vehicle 2 in a rearward facing direction so as to provide the driver of the vehicle with a rear-view video image on display unit 6 (via electrical connections 7). A mirror image of the view captured by the camera(s) may be produced and displayed at the display unit 6. The display unit 6 may also adjust the images captured by a plurality of cameras so as to provide a panoramic rear-view image that has the appearance of having come from only one camera.

1 VEHICLE VIDEO REAR VIEW This invention relates to a vehicle video rear
view.
2338363 The rear view from a vehicle is normally produced by the reflection in mirrors fixed adjacent to the driver, rear view mirrors are well known.
In nearly all vehicles it is difficult to get a complete uninterrupted rear view without "blind spots". For the driver of a vehicle it is normally necessary to move the head and eyes to get a general view of what is behind the vehicle. This can be particularly hazardous when reversing, moving out to overtake or approaching a motorway on the slip road especially when the vehicle has an enclosed back eg a lorry, or when towing a caravan or trailer.
According to the present invention there is provided a vehicle video rear view comprising a video camera or cameras attached to the vehicle in positions necessary to show a rear view, a video display or displays adjacent to the driver, a means for electrical connection between the camera or cameras and the display or displays, a means to electrically power the vehicle video rear view system, a means to produce a mirror image on the display or displays, a means to adjust the images from more than one video camera to give a panoramic view on the display or displays making the image appear as though it has come from one camera.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- figure 1 shows a plan, of a lorry with one suggested form of a vehicle video rear view layout.
figure 2 shows a perspective, of a lorry with one suggested form of a vehicle video rear view layout.
figure 3 illustrates one possible position for the mounting of the display adjacent to the driver.
Referring to the drawing the vehicle 2 is fitted with a video rear view system comprising video cameras 3, 4 & 5 secured to the vehicle 2 in positions necessary to show a view to the rear (shown hatched) of the driver and hence the vehicle, a video display 6 adjacent to the driver, and a means of electrical connection 7 between the cameras and the video display. A means to provide a power supply to the system ( not shown).

Claims (12)

1 A vehicle video rear view comprising a video camera secured to the rear of the vehicle, a video display adjacent to the driver, an electrical link between the video camera and the video display, an electric power supply.
2 A vehicle video rear view as claimed in claim 1 wherein more than one video camera is attached to the vehicle.
3 A vehicle video rear view as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the vehicle video rear view takes the place of the vehicle rear view mirrors.
4 A vehicle video rear view as claimed in claim 1, claim 2 or claim 3 wherein the video camera or cameras are secured any where on the vehicle.
A vehicle video rear view as claimed in any preceding claim wherein means are provided to use cameras of different focal lengths.
6 A vehicle video rear view as claimed in any preceding claim wherein means are provided to remove the video camera or cameras.
7 A vehicle video rear view as claimed in any preceding claim wherein means are provided to produce a mirror image on the video display or displays.
8 A vehicle video rear view as claimed in any preceding claim wherein means are provided to use more than one video display.
9 A vehicle-video rear view as claimed in any preceding claim wherein means are provided to produce a panoramic rear view on the video display or displays f rom the image sent by one or more video cameras.
A vehicle video rear view as claimed in any preceding claim wherein means are provided to supply power to the vehicle video rear view system separately from the power supply of the vehicle.
11 A vehicle video rear view as claimed in any preceding claim wherein means are provided to supply power to the vehicle video rear view system from the power supply system inherent in the vehicle.
12 A vehicle video rear view substantially as described herein with reference to figures 1-3 of the accompanying drawings.
