Abstract

233,703. F÷ttinger, H. May 6, 1924, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Sails. - Eddies in the flow of air or liquids around solid bodies are prevented by imparting additional flow energy to the friction border layer at one or more points. Thus, Fig. 2, a fan or the like may blow air through pipes 12, 13 to nozzles 10, 11 terminating in slots 7, 8 in a cylindrical body, so that the border layer flowing past these slots is supplied with additional energy which facilitates its advance into the zones 7-4, 8-4 of strongly increasing pressure. End discs 15 may be provided. Several slots 20, 21, 22, Fig. 4, may be provided one behind the other, and supplied with graduated amounts of energy, the energy required for the slot 20 being less than that for slots 21 or 22. The energy sources may be separate fan-wheels or a single fan-wheel tapped at different radii. Fig. 4 shows the method applied to the blades of turbines, wind wheels, fans, and the like, and to rigid sails. In a modification, Fig. 5, rotating vane-wheels 25, 26 are arranged in slots in the body so as to project into the border layer flowing past and supply it with additional energy. A series of such vanewheels may be arranged one behind the others The point of supply of the additional energy may be adjusted, for example by making it movable together with a portion of the wall, or certain slots may be put in or out of action. The fan, jet-pump, or the like supplying the energy may be driven by an independent motor, or the flow itself may be utilized for this purpose in combination with fan-wheels, suction nozzles, jet apparatus, or the like.
