FRANS H. C. COPP'US, v0F WORCESTER. MASSACHSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO COPPUS ENGI- NEERING AND EQUIPMENT COMPANY, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, A COR- PORATION 0F MASSACHUSETTS.
TURBINE-DRIVEN BLOWER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all lwhom t may concern Beit known that I, FRANS H. C. Corvus, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Turbine-Driven Blowers, of which the following, together with the accompanying drawings, 1s a specification.
The present invention relates to a turbinedriven blower; and the same contemplates an improved arrangement of the turbine and the blower constituting such a set, whereby the disposal of the exhaust steam from the turbine lis facilitated, the back pressure within the casing of the turbine is reduced, and the action of the blowerkis improved..`
This application is a division of my copending application Serial No. 730,561, filed ovember 11, 1912, -for a steam turbine.
The features of the present invention are fully set forth in the followimr description I. and pointed out in the annexe claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which the single figure is a sectional view of the apparatus embodying my invention.
In said figure, the numeral 1 denotes a lturbine wheel, having the usual buckets or blades 2. Rotary motion is imparted to said wheel by means of ste-am under pressure, admitted by a supply pipe 3 to the steam chamber 4, formed in the casing 5 which incloses said wheel. The shaft 6 of said turbine wheel, which is suitably journaled in the casing 5, carries on its outer end. a fan 7, disposed within the mouth of a casing or conduit 8, through which said fan serves to force a current of air, used for AVentilating purposes, orf to produce an artificial draft, 1n the ashv pit of a boiler, or for any other purpose.
The exhaust opening 9 of the casing 5 opens laterally therefrom in the` direction of the conduit 8; a pipe 10 isthreaded therein, and the other end of said pipe has aI snu sliding fit within a tubular passage 11 ormed in the wall of the blower conduit Divided and this, application led April 8, to permit of expanison and contractioriof thc connected parts. The passage 11 communicates through a discharge passage'12 with the interior of the conduit 8,' contiguous to the fan 7. Said discharge passage 12 is directed into the interior of said conduit 8 atl an oblique angle to the axis of Patented oet. 23, 1917'.
the fang?, so that the movement of air through the conduit 8, by said fan, in the direction of the arrow a, induces a current through the passage 11 1n the direction of the arrow b thereby reducing the back pres-f sure of the steam in the steam chamber 4, ,Y and causing thev exhaust steam from the turbine to become thoroughly inter-mingled with the air set in motionv by the blower. l I claim- 1. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a turbine, of a blower driven thereby, and having an inclosing casing, and means for delivering the exhaust steam from said turbine into the casing of said blower in a direction corresponding to the movement of air through said casing.
2. In a device of the class described, a shaft, a turbine wheel carried by one end of said shaft, a fan blower carried by the other end of said shaft, a casing inclosing said turbine wheel having an exhaust opening, a
second casing inclosing said fan blower having an exhaust passage, means for connecting said first and second casings with a space between them, and a pipe. connecting said exhaust opening of the iirst casing with said exhaust passage of the second casing.
3. In a device of 1e class described, a casing, a steam turbine'inclosed therein, a second casing spaced from said first casing and having openl ends, a fan blower inclosed therein, and a steam exhaust passage leading from saidfirst casing and openin into sald second casing in front of sai fan blower.
4. In a device of the class described, a casing, a turbine wheel inclosed therein, a second casing spaced from said first casing and having open ends, a `fan blower inclosed therein, a steam exhaust passage leading from said first casing and opening into sai second casing in front of s aid fan blower, exhaust steam from said turbine into said with the delivery end of Said exhaust pascasing.
10 sage at an oblique angle to the axis of said Dated this thirteenth day of April 1915.
fan blower.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with u steam turbine, of n Witnesses: blower driven thereby, :L casing iuclosing Pi-:NIiLorn COMBERBACH, said blower, und means for delivering the (jrEn'rnUDe MCGRATH.
