Abstract

A method of decorating skirting boards while raising the height thereof including the step of fixing to a strip-like profile 2 to a skirting board 1. The upper portion 3 of the profile is at least partly solid where a gap or recess may be used to allow the passage of electrical wiring. The lower portion 4 is open to envelop the skirting board.

Description

1 DECORATING METHOD 2335446 The present invention relates to a method and
device for facilitating the decorating of skirting boards.
GB-A-2269550 describes a method of decorating skirting boards in which a strip of coloured or white material is adhered to the skirting board, this strip having a predetermined cross section at least approximately matching that of the skirting board to be decorated. The inventor of that earlier patent application has made an approvement thereon, which is described below. For the avoidance of any doubt, the disclosure of GB-A- 2269550 is incorporated herein by reference.
The present invention provides a method of decorating skirting boards while raising the height thereof, the method including the step of fixing to a skirting board a strip-like profile which has a depth at least approximately matching that of the skirting board to be decorated, the upper portion of the profile being at least partly solid and having a surface for attachment to the wall above the skirting board, and the lower part of the profile being open, to envelop the skirting board, and having a surface for attachment to that skirting board.
The upper portion will have a cross section which is the shape of the skirting board desired for the room being decorated. This shape may either be of a simple design - a taper or bevel like on ordinary skirting boards - or may be of a complex decorative shape such as the 'ItorusIl shape mentioned and described in GB-A-2269550.
With the invention, the height of an existing skirting board is raised. This may be necessary where an existing skirting board to be decorated is extremely uneven and so the known decorating strip, which is of relatively thin 2 material, may not provide a rigid finish. Alternatively, it may be desired to raise the height of the skirting board to allow for the fact that deep fitted carpets are being used. Most particularly, the invention has the advantage that the shape of the skirting board can be changed, for example from a plain design to a decorative design, in a simple way without needing to completely replace the existing skirting board.
of course, in some instances, a home owner may wish to turn a decorative skirting board back into a simple design, if the decorative design is not to his or her personal taste.
An additional unexpected advantage of the invention is that a gap will generally exist between the solid part of the profile and the existing skirting board. This gap can usefully accommodate electrical cabling, telephone wires, speaker wires etc.
Alternatively, the solid portion of the profile may be provided with a dedicated recess or internal bore, specifically to allow the passage of wiring.
The external surface of the profile will most often be white, but can be any colour to suit the decoration of the relevant room.
The profile can be provided with strips of adhesive material, for example conventional double-sided adhesive tape, for fixing the profile to the existing skirting board and to the wall. Alternatively, standard adhesives could be used, such as conventional liquid or semi-liquid adhesives. The fitting of the profile is essentially as described in the earlier patent application.
The profile may be formed or white PVC or any suitable 3 conventional plastics material with the solid part being formed of polystyrene, for example. As an alternative, the solid part could be formed of plaster, if desired. The choice of the material is not critical to the invention.
The invention concerns not only the above described method but also a profile for use in the method, this profile having a cross section in the shape of a skirting board and having an upper at least partly solid portion and a lower open portion. The upper portion may have a recess or bore for electrical wiring and both the upper and lower portions may be provided with adhesive means on their inner surfaces for contact with a wall and an existing skirting board respectively. Still further, the invention provides a kit of parts comprising a profile as described above, together with adhesive means.
Examples of the invention are described briefly below, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show the system described in the earlier patent application; and Figs. 4 and 4 show examples of the invention.
In Fig. 4, reference numeral 1 indicates an existing skirting board. Reference numeral 2 includes the new profile having an upper portion 3 in the shape of a 'Itorus11 skirting board. The lower strip-like part 4 has an adhesive means (e.g. tape) 5 on its inner surface for contact with the existing skirting board. Similarly, the upper portion has an adhesive means 6.
Advantageously, the profile will consist of a shaped strip of plastics material, with polystyrene fitted on the inside of the upper portion thereof. However, conceivably the upper portion could be fitted to the lower strip-like portion without the strip covering the upper solid portion; is 1 4 in other words the solid upper portion may have a surface finish which is of itself sufficient, without needing to be covered by the plastics material which forms the lower portion.
As compared to the prior art system, the profile will be less flexible, but will still have a degree of flexibility. It can easily be cut to appropriate lengths.
As seen in Fig. 4, a gap is formed between the upper portion 3 and the existing skirting board. This gap can usefully be used for electrical cabling etc. Alternatively, the upper portion may be fitted so as to rest on top of the existing skirting board, in which case the lower portion of the profile may need to be cut. Even in this situation, however, a gap will still tend to be formed between the upper portion and the existing skirting board.
Another. alternative would be to provide the upper portion with a recess along its lower or inner surface, to house wiring. Still further, the upper portion could be provided with a central bore for this purpose.
The new profiles will in practice tend to have a height of 125-150 mm, though the height is not critical. The height of the upper portion may be 25-50 mm, in particular about 38 mm. The depth of the profile will typically be about 13-25 mm, reflecting the usual depth of existing skirting boards. The strip of plastics material; e.g. PVC, may be 0.5-2 mm thick.
Fig. 5 shows another embodiment where a simple shape is being used, rather than the more complex, decorative cross section of Fig. 1. This system could be used where it is simply desired to raise the height of the skirting board, for example to cover existing skirting boards which are very unlevel, to accommodate deeper carpets or even to change a decorative skirting board to a plain skirting board. Again, a void can be provided in which electrical wiring is fitted.
While the invention has particular reference to skirting boards, it is possible to apply the same concept to other items to be decorated around the house, for example architraves and door frames.
