Abstract

An edging such as a stair nosing or threshold edging comprises an elongate part (10) adapted to be secured to a surface. A channel (12) extends along the upper surface of the elongate part and at least one side wall (14) of the channel is profiled to receive and engage an insert (18) located in the channel. The elongate part (10) may be secured to a surface by screws (not shown) which extend through the base of the channel (12). The insert (18) then serves to conceal the screwheads. The insert may also be provided with a non-slip surface. In an embodiment, the edging comprises a stair nosing having an L-section elongate body wherein an arm (24) is located vertically in front of a stair riser. <IMAGE>

Description

EDGING This invention relates to an edging and in particular to an edging for use in stair nosing, on walls, on floors and the like.
Stair nosings are frequently fitted to stairs in order to provide a non-slip surface on the stair treads. One type of nosing is designed to be fixed to stairs by means of screws or like fasteners which extend through the nosing and into the stair tread therebeneath. This is not a very satisfactory way of fixing a nosing to a stair because it leaves the screwhead showing which is unattractive. Plugs of the same material as the insert are sometimes inserted over the top of the screws to improve the appearance but these are frequently displaced by the pressures applied by foot traffic.Another method adopted to overcome this problem is to design the insert in the form of a dovetail so that it is mechanically held in position but this imposes limitations to the thickness and shape of the two parts and also to the flexibility and durability of the material from which the two parts may be made. The present invention has been made with the intention of overcoming the problems experienced with these other methods.
According to the invention there is provided an edging comprising an elongate part adapted to be secured to a surface, a channel extending along the upper surface of the elongate part and at least one side wall of said channel being profiled to receive and engage an insert located in said channel.
Preferably the insert is a non-slip insert. The edging may be a stair nosing and the elongate part may be adapted to be secured to a stair tread.
One or both sides of the channel are preferably undercut so as to receive a tongue which projects from one or both sides, respectively, of the insert. If desired the edging, for example a stair nosing, can be secured to a surface such as a stair tread by fastening means such as screws which extend through the base of the channel. The screws are, therefore, concealed when the insert is in place in the channel.
In addition to the insert being held by the engagement of the edges of the insert with one or both profiled edges of the channel, adhesive can also be used to hold the insert in place. For example an adhesive tape can be applied to the insert and/or to the channel in order to prevent relative movement between the two parts when the edging is in use.
The insert may be designed for decorative purposes.
For example, the insert may be chosen tc match a particular style of staircase or flooring. Thus, the insert may have any suitable surface pattern. The insert may be both decorative and non-slip for example made of a non-slip material or mechanically designed to have a non-slip surface.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the edging comprises a stair nosing having a substantially L-section elongate body which can be fixed to a stair so that one part provided with the channel rests on the tread and the other part extends a little way down the adjacent riser.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which is an exploded cross-section of a nosing and insert.
Referring to the drawing the nosing comprises an L-section extruded elongate body 10. A channel 12 is provided in the outer side of one part of body 10. The sides 14 of the channel are undercut to receive tongues 16 on the sides of an insert 18 which is dimensioned to fit in channel 12 so as to present a flush surface with the surrounding body 10.
As can be seen in the drawing shoulders 20 are defined at each side of the insert. When the insert is positioned in the channel 12 the shoulders 20 engage the edges 22 of the channel so as to limit movement of the insert relative to the body.
In use the body is secured to a stair for example by screws (not shown) which extend through the base of the channel and into the tread of the stair. The arm 24 of the L-section body extends along the front of the riser adjacent the tread.
The insert which is preferably of non-slip material is then fitted into the channel.
It will be appreciated that an alternative embodiment of the invention particularly suited for use for example on door thresholds floors, or walls will be similar to the stair nosing embodiment described above but where the arm 24 of the body 10 is omitted.
The invention is not limited to the above described embodiment and many variations and modifications can be made.
