Figures 1 and 2 show a first embodiment of a stair nosing 10 on a stair 100 comprising a tread 102 and a riser 104. The stair nosing 10 comprises a first part 12 and a second part 14. The second part 14 is fastened to, and extends over, the first part. The first part 12 comprises a tread engaging portion 16 and a riser portion 18.
The riser portion 18 extends transverse to the tread engaging portion 16 and is mounted, in use, over the riser 104 of the stair 100. The riser portion 18 constitutes a trim portion to provide a decorative element. The tread engaging portion 16 is mounted, in use, on the tread 102 of the stair 100.
The second part 14 comprises a main member 19 formed of two portions, namely a stair engaging portion 20, for engaging the stair 100, and a mounting portion 22, for mounting the second part 14 on the first part 12.
The tread engaging portion 16 of the first part 12 comprises two upwardly extending first attachment formations 24, each comprising an upwardly extending first securing member 25 and a detent formation 26 on the upper edge thereof. The mounting portion 22 of the second part 14 has two downwardly extending second securing formations 27.
Each second securing formation 27 comprises a downwardly extending second securing member 28. A detent formation 30 is provided at the lower edge of each downwardly extending securing member 28 to cooperate with the detent formation 26 on the upstanding member 25, thereby securing the second part 14 to the first part 12.
A support member 32 extends from the mounting portion 22 at a position midway between the two downwardly extending securing members 28. The support member 22 engages the tread engaging portion 16 of the first part 12.
The stair engaging portion 20 of the second part 14 comprises a tread portion 33, an outer support member 34 and an inner support member 36, both of which extend from the tread portion 33 to the tread 102.
The main member 19 defines an elongate recess 38 which extends between the stair engaging portion 20 and the mounting portion 22. More specifically, the recess 38 is defined between a downwardly extending wall member 39 and an adjacent one of the downwardly extending securing members 28.
A substantially horizontal member 40 extends between the wall member 39 and the adjacent downwardly extending securing member 28 at the lower edges thereof.
An aperture 41 (see Figure 3) is defined in the horizontal member 40. A screw 42 can be inserted through the aperture 41 to secure the second part 14 and the first part 12 to the stair 100. The second part further includes two tread members 43A, 43B affixed to the main member 19.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 3, one of the tread members 43A is affixed to the upper surface of the stair engaging portion 20, and the other tread member 43B is affixed to the mounting portion 22 on the opposite side of the recess 38.
The stair nosing 10 further includes an elongate cover part 44 which is inserted into the recess 38 when the screw is received through the aperture 40 to secure the second part 14 to the stair 100.
The cover part 44 comprises a main element 45 and a tread element 46 affixed to the main element 45. Downwardly extending securing elements 48 are provided on the main element 45. Each securing element 45 has detents on the lower edge thereof.
The detents can cooperate with corresponding detents on the upper regions of the downwardly extending wall member 39 and the adjacent downwardly extending securing member 28.
The tread members 43A, 43B are arranged such that they lie flush with the tread element 46 on the cover part 44 when the cover part 44 is secured in the recess 38.
The outer support member 34 on the second part 14 provides a rear edge 54, against which a stair covering 58 can abut. An edge member 52 is provided along the rear edge 54, and extends over an edge region of the stair covering 58. The edge member 52 is pivotally attached to the rear tread member 43A at a flexible pivot 56.
The tread members 43A, 43B are affixed to the stair engaging portion 20 and to the mounting portion 22 by a suitable adhesive or, advantageously, by being bonded thereto during manufacture, for example by co-extrusion of the tread members 43A, 43B onto the main member 19.
The purpose of the flexible pivot 56 is to allow the position of the edge member 52 to change, depending upon the height of the stair covering 58. In Figure 1, the stair covering 58 has a first height Hi, but in Figure 2, the stair covering 58 has a second height H2, the second height H2 being greater than the first height Hi. As can be seen from Figures 1 and 2, the edge member 52 can pivot relative to the outer support member 34 to accommodate the different heights of stair covering 58.
The first part 12 is formed of a PVC material by an extrusion process. The main member i9 of the second part i4, and the main element 45 of the cover part 44, are formed of a PVC material. The tread members 43A, 43B are also formed of a PVC material, and are affixed to the main member 19 by the tread members 43A, 43B by being co-extruded onto the main member 19 during manufacture.
Similarly, the tread element 46 is formed of a PVC material, and is affixed to the main element 45 by being co-extruded onto the main element 45 during manufacture.
The PVC material from which the tread members 43A, 43B and the tread element 46 are formed is softer than the PVC material from which the main member 19 and the main element 45 are formed. This allows the tread members 43A, 43B and the tread element 46 to provide a non-slip' surface upon which people can tread.
During manufacture, colouring agents can be added to the plastics materials to be used for the manufacture of the first and second parts 12, 14. This allows each of the components to be coloured throughout, thereby retaining the same finish in the event of damage to the surface. In addition, it allows the user to select first and second parts 12, 14 of different colours, thereby providing a wide range of colour combinations.
Referring to Figures 4 to 6, a second embodiment of a stair nosing generally designated 110, is provided on a stair 200 having a tread 202 and a riser 204. The riser 204 comprises a bull nosed portion 206.
The stair nosing 110 comprises a first part 112 and a second part 114 mounted on the first part 112. The first part 112 extends over the second part 114. The first part 112 comprises a tread engaging portion 116 to engage the tread 202 of the stair 200.
The tread engaging portion 116 has opposite long edges 116A, 116B (see Figure 6).
The first part 112 further includes a first riser portion 118 extending downwardly from the long edge 11 6A of the tread engaging portion 116. The first riser portion 118 curves downwardly from the tread engaging portion 116 to engage the riser 206 at the most forward point of the riser 206. The second part 114 comprises a main member 115 having a mounting portion 120 for mounting the second part 114 on the first part 112. The mounting portion has opposite long edges 120A and 120B.
The main member 115 further includes a second riser portion 122, which extends from the mounting portion 120, and curves around the first riser portion 118 in engagement therewith. The second riser portion 122 is curved so that it extends around the bull nosed portion 206 of the stair 200. The second riser portion 122 is in the form of a trim portion to provide a decorative element over the stair riser 204.
The first part 112 comprises four upwardly extending first securing formations 124, each of which comprises an upwardly extending first securing member 125 and a detent 126 at the upper edge of the first securing member 125.
The main member 115 of the second part 114 comprises four downwardly extending securing formations 127, each of which comprises a downwardly extending second securing member 128 and a detent 130 at the lower edge of the second securing member 128.
The detent 126 on each of the upwardly extending first securing members 125 cooperates with a respective one of the detents 130 on the second securing members 128 to secure the first and second parts 112, 114 to each other.
The tread engaging portion 116 of the first part 112 defines an aperture 132 through which a screw 134 can be received to secure the first part 112 to the stair 200.
The first part 112 has a rear edge 142, against which the stair covering can abut.
The second part 114 includes a tread portion 143 on the main member 115. The tread portion 143 is affixed to the main member 115 by a suitable adhesive or, advantageously, by being bonded thereto during manufacture, for example by co-extrusion.
The second part 114 has an edge member 140, which is pivotally attached at a pivot 144 to the tread portion 143. As with the first embodiments shown in Figures 1 to 3, the pivotal attachment of the edge member 140 to the tread portion 143 allows different heights of stair covering 146 to be accommodated.
Figures 7 to 11 show a third embodiment of the stair nosing, generally designated 210, which is intended to be used with a stair 300 comprising a tread 302 and a substantially vertical riser 304. The stair nosing 210 comprises many of the features of the stair nosing 110, and these have been designated with the same reference numerals as in Figures 4 to 6.
The stair nosing 210 differs from the stair nosing 110 in that the first part 112 comprises a substantially planar downwardly extending first riser portion 212 provided at its lower edge with an abutment member 214 which extends forwardly and rearwardly at right angles to the downwardly extending first riser portion 212.
In use, the rearwardly extending region of the abutment member 214 abuts against the riser 304. The forwardly extending region of the abutment member 214 abuts against the second riser portion 122 of the second part 114.
Figures 10 and 11 show the use of the stair nosing 210 on a stair 400, having a tread 402 and a riser 404 which is angled rearwardly downwardly from the tread 302.
The stair nosing 210 shown in Figures 10 and 11 is the same as the stair nosing 210 shown in Figures 7, 8 and 9, but in use, the stair nosing is arranged such that the top of the first riser portion 212 engages the stair 300. In this position, as can be seen, the rearwardly extending region of the abutment member 214 engages the riser 404, and the forwardly extending region of the abutment member 214 engages the second riser portion 122 of the second part 114.
In the embodiments shown in Figures 4 to 11, the first part 112 is formed of a PVC material by an extrusion process. The main member 115 of the second part 114 is formed of a PVC material. The tread portion 143 is also formed of a PVC material, and is affixed to the main member 115 by being co-extruded onto each other during manufacture.
The PVC material from which the tread portion 143 is formed is softer than the PVC material from which the main member 115 is formed. This allows the tread portion 143 to provide a non-slip' surface upon which people can tread.
There are thus described embodiments of a stair nosing which are easily mounted on a stair, and can be used with a plurality of different stair types, and with a plurality of different heights of stair covering.
During manufacture of the embodiments shown in Figures 4 to 11, colouring agents can be added to the plastics materials to be used for the manufacture of the first and second parts 112, 114. This allows each of the components to be coloured throughout, thereby retaining the same finish in the event of damage to the surface.
If desired, a decorative and protective foil layer can be applied to the first or second parts 12, 14, 112, 114, for example on the first and/or second riser portions 18, 118, thereby allowing a variety of decorative effects to be created.
Various modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
For example, the downwardly extending first riser portion 212 of the embodiments shown in Figures 10 and 11 could be angled rearwardly in the event that the angle of the riser relative to the tread on the stair upon which it is to be used is at a more acute angle than shown in Figures 10 and 11.
Figures 12 to 17 show modifications of the embodiments of the stair nosing 110 and 210 shown in Figures 4 to 11. The reference numerals used to designate features in Figures 4 to 11 are used to designate corresponding features in Figures 12 to 17.
The embodiments shown in Figures 12 to 17 differ from the embodiments shown in Figures 4 to 11 in that the second part 114 has only two downwardly extending second securing formations 127, each of which is arranged at a respective one of the opposite long edges 120A, 120B of the mounting member 120.
Correspondingly, the first part 112 comprises only two of the upwardly extending first securing formations 124 arranged at the opposite long edges 11 6A, 11 6B of the tread engaging portion 116.
Each of the two first securing formations 124 co-operates with a respective one of the two second securing formations 127 to secure the first part 112 to the second part 114.
Between the two first securing formations 124, the first part 112 has two or three upwardly extending support element 150, which are attached to the tread engaging portion 120 and extend upwardly therefrom to engage, and support the second part 112.
