Abstract

A package for distributing promotional information comprises outer packaging 2 enclosing an inner container 4 which is in a form representing a household article such as a lidded refuse receptacle, wheelie-bin, swing-bin, washing machine, cooker or refrigerator. The inner container 4, which can be made from plastic, cardboard or metal, is removable from the outer packaging 2 and has access means comprising an opening and a closure 5 which mimics the access means of the household article. Inside the inner container 4, there is an information-containing medium such as a folded or screwed-up piece of paper (6, Fig.1d) a CD Rom, a cloth article or a booklet which is removable through the access means. The outer packaging 2 can be a resealable tube which preferably has a lid 1 at each end of the tube and an address label 3. The outer packaging 2 can be made from impact resistant packaging material or shrink wrap plastics.

Description

1 Apparatus for Distributing Information 2331739 The invention relates to
apparatus f or distributing information, preferably but not exclusively to apparatus for distributing advertising, promotional or marketing material via postal or courier services.
Types of apparatus for distributing information are known. Such apparatus usually comprises packaging or an envelope, made from card or paperboard, into which a flat sheet of paper or card bearing written information is inserted. In the known arrangements, the information is supplied in packaging which often serves no further function and so is thrown away by the recipient of the information. In addition, as the information contained in the envelope or packaging is supplied on a conventional twodimensional flat sheet form, the material bearing the information is not easily distinguished from all the other papers which may be found on a desk in an office and therefore the information that the sender wishes to convey can easily be lost or ignored by the intended recipient of that information.
The aim of the present invention is to produce apparatus for distributing information in which the information can be transmitted safely by postal or courier services and also to produce apparatus where the information that is transmitted is provided in an attractive and eye catching manner so that the recipient takes notice of the information contained in the apparatus.
According to the invention there is provided apparatus for transmitting information, said apparatus comprising an outer packaging which encloses a further inner container which is in a form representing a household article, said inner container being removable from said outer packaging, with said inner container having access means comprising an opening and closure for said opening, said access means mimicking the access means of the household article, said inner container being adapted, in use to contain, a medium containing information, said medium, being removable from 1 2 the inner container through the access means of the inner container.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the inner container is in the form representing a refuse receptacle. such as a lidded dustbin, a wheelie-bin or a swing-bin. However, other representations of household articles could be used as long as the household article that is being represented has an opening which provides access to the article during normal use, for example a washing machine having a front or top opening lid, a cooker or a refrigerator having a door which is opened by the user etc.
The inner container is preferably of a plastics material. Any type of plastics could be used which can be easily molded into a three dimensional shape and in particular, recycled plastics could be used, thereby providing a more environmentally friendly form of packaging. However, it is envisaged that the inner container could be of other materials such as metal or cardboard, for example laminated cardboard.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the information is contained on a piece of paper which is folded or screwed up into a ball. However, the information could be contained on other types of media eg. cloth, CD Roms, booklets etc. The important feature of the medium it is of dimensions whereby it can be contained within the inner container and it can be easily withdrawn from the inner container by the recipient of the apparatus.
As the inner container including the information medium is intended to be sent out to clients or customers usually be post or by courier service, it is important that the packaging provides a degree of protection for the inner container from any impacts that it may receive during transit. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the packaging enclosing the inner container may be an impact resistant packaging material. Also it is necessary to provide a container on which the recipient's address can be easily placed and seen. An embodiment of the invention will 1-1 3 now be described by way of example with reference to the drawing, in which:
Fig.l. Shows apparatus for distributing information, with each part of the apparatus being shown individually.
Figure la shows the outer packaging layer which in this case is shown as a cardboard tube 2 having at each end, a closure in the form of a lid 1. Each lid is formed of a plastics material and is a firm fit in the associated end of the tube so enabling the tube to be resealed. In this embodiment, the tube and lid provide an impact resistant packaging layer for the apparatus. In an alternative embodiment, the outer container is in the form of an envelope or a shrink wrap plastics layer. An address label 3 may be placed on the tube 2. The outer packaging encloses an inner container which is shown as figure lb. In this case, the inner container is shown as a representation of lidded household refuse bin. The refuse bin comprises main body 4 and removable lid 5 both formed from a mouldable plastics material. The bin is shown with the lid removed in figure lc. In an alternative embodiment, the inner container can be made from cardboard or from a metal, such a aluminium.
Inside the inner container there is an information medium, which in this case is a screwed up piece of paper 6 shown in figure ld. The piece of paper may be un-folded and flattened to reveal the information on the paper 6a as shown in figure le.
The concept of the invention, which is designed to appeal to the recipient, is that of reversing the normal procedure in which the recipient of promotional information, which is often referred to as cold selling or junk mail simply screws it up and throws it into a waste receptacle, without really reading the message. The present invention "reverses" this process by providing the message already screwed up. This catches the recipientOs eye and attention to a much greater degree, so inducing the recipient to read the message or information.
