Abstract
A wheelbarrow comprises a tubular metal frame 2 to which are attached a wheel 3 and two handles 2D, 2E. The frame defines a generally flat platform 4 having at its end near the wheel an upwardly extending lip 4B. A wheelbarrow bucket 5 is releasably mounted on the platform 4 by releasable fastenings including a tongue 6A provided on the bucket 5 which extends through a slot in the platform lip 4B. Anchoring points, which may be holes, are provided on the platform 4 to enable ropes to be fitted to hold goods on the platform 4 With the bucket 5 removed, the wheelbarrow can be used to transport large objects such as paving slabs or building blocks.
Description
The present invention relates to improvements to wheelbarrows.
Most wheelbarrows consist of a tubular frame with a wheel mounted thereon towards the front, and the frame forming a pair of handles at the rear. Mounted on the frame is a barrow bucket having a generally rectangular base with sloping sides. Such known wheelbarrows are ideal for carrying and tipping particulate material such as sand and soil or loose material such as leaves etc. If however it is attempted to carry large objects such as paving slabs or building blocks, these are often larger than the rectangular base and so need propping up against the side walls leading to an uneven distribution of the load and a limitation to the volume of the load. Also if it is attempted to carry one or more bag of particulate material, such as cement or sand, which are generally larger than the rectangular base, the bags wedge against the sloping sides and it is difficult for the user's hands to get under the bag to remove it.
The invention seeks to provide a wheelbarrow to avoid the above difficulties.
According to the present t invention there is provided a wheelbarrow comprising: a) a wheelbarrow frame b) at least one wheel secured to the frame c) at least one handle secured to the frame d) a platform on the frame, e) a barrow bucket, and f) releasable connection means to secure the bucket to the platform.
Preferably the platform has a generally planar base with a lip extending from the base.
In one embodiment the bucket base rests on the platform and a side wall of the bucket rests against the lip.
In one embodiment the releasable connection means include releasable clips connecting the bucket to the platform. One clip may include a tongue extending from a side wall of the bucket which engages in a slot in the lip.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of one embodiment,
Figure 2 shows a side view of the wheelbarrow of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 shows a plan view from above of the wheelbarrow of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings there is shown a wheelbarrow 1 having a frame 2 formed from metal tubing. The frame 2 has a front end 2A supporting a wheel 3, a middle section forming legs 2B,2C, and a pair of handles 2D,2E at a rear end.
Mounted on the frame 2 is a platform 4 formed from sheet metal. Platform 4 has a generally planar rectangular base 4A, a lip 4B extending from the base, and skirts 4C,4D to give rigidity to the platform. Lip 4B extends partly over the wheel 3.
A barrow bucket 5 is provided with a rectangular base SA, and sloping side walls 5B,5C,5D,5E. Bucket base 5A rests on the base 4A of the platform and side wall 5D of the bucket rests against lip 4B. Bucket 5 may also be formed of sheet metal.
Bucket 5 is releasably secured to the platform 4 by releasable connection means in the form of front clip 6 and rear clips ?A,7B. Front clip 6 is formed by a tongue 6A on the bucket which passes through a slot 6B in the lip. Rear clips 7A,7B may be in the form of toggle clips well know in the art and not specifically described herein.
In use, the wheelbarrow of the invention can be used like a conventional wheelbarrow for transporting particulate material and the like in the bucket 5. If it is desired to carry goods such as blocks, bricks, sacks of cement or sands or other items, the bucket 5 can be removed by first undoing clips 7A,7B and then sliding the tongue 6A out of the slot 6B, and the platform 4 used to support the goods.
If desired, the bucket 5 (or an additional bucket), could be made larger such as from plastics, to transport light weight bulky items like leaves. It is envisaged that the wheelbarrow of the invention might be sold with one or more different buckets and indeed different attachments other than buckets to fit on the platform.
If desired one or more holes or other anchoring points could be provided in the platform, e.g. on the skirts 4C,4D to allow restraints to be fitted, such as rope or straps, to hold goods on the platform.
The wheelbarrow of the invention may take a different form to that specifically described above. For example it could have two or more wheels and a different handle, and some or all parts could be formed of material other than metal, e.g. plastics or wood.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
