Abstract

A nozzle for a hand-held water supply comprising a face plate having a plurality of holes and a common water source supplying all the holes, is characterised in that the nozzle is provided with means for altering the number of holes in the face plate to alter the trajectory of streams of water issuing from the nozzle.

Description

Water-Dispensing Nozzle This invention relates to hand-held nozzles where water issues from bore holes in a face plate.
Present nozzles deliver water at low pressure in a horizontal fan like dispersion from a large number of bore holes in a face plate fed from a common water source, for example the 'rose' of a watering can.
This invention reduces the number of holes in the face plate to increase the trajectory of the water issuing from the lesser number of bore holes. The trajectory of the water is further increased by reducing the number of bore holes in use in the face plate The face plate need not necessarily be of any particular shape to produce a fan-like or conical trajectory in the water issuing from the bore holes. The face plate can be square, oval or round.
According to the invention there is provided a nozzle for a hand-held water supply comprising a face plate having a plurality of holes and a common water source supplying all the holes, characterised in that the nozzle is provided with means for altering the number of holes in the face plate to alter the trajectory of streams of water issuing from the nozzle.
In one embodiment of the invention, the face plate is supplied with a hinged plate or slide arrangeable to close off some of the holes in the base plate. In particular, the face plate is oblong and has a gentle longitudinal convex curvature to cause a divergence of the water issuing from the bore holes, thus producing a fan like dispersion of the water.
To further increase the trajectory of the streams of water issuing from the bore holes, some of the bore holes in use are blocked off by a hinged plate or a slide causing a greater trajectory of the water issuing from lesser number of bore holes in use.
In another embodiment of the invention the nozzle is provided with a series of interchangeable face plates having different numbers of holes. In particular, the noule is round and the number of bore holes in use is reduced or increased by using removable face plates with a different number of bore holes in each face plate. In order to cause a divergenceof the streams of water issuing from the face plate, holes in the face plate are bored at an angle away from the central longitudinal axis of the face plate to cause a divergement of the streams of water issuing from the bore holes.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a nozzle as used for attachment to a hose.
Figures 2 and 3 are views of the face plate of Figure 1 with a slide uncovering (Figure 2) and covering (Figure 3) some of the bore holes.
Figure 4 is a view of a face plate with a hinged plate to cover some of the bore holes in use.
Figure 5 is a side view of Figure 4, with the hinged plate in the closed position Figure 6 is a side view of a nozzle for use by fire fighting services, featuring the upper part of the nozzle.
Figure 7 is an overhead view of the nozzle of Figure 6, with a face plate inserted.
Figure 8 is a view of a face plate with a different number of bore holes than the face plate shown in Figure 7.
In the first embodiment, in Figure 1, a hand-held fan-type nozzle 1, has an apertured face plate 2 and screw connection to the hose (shown stylised as 3). At either side of the face plate 2 are provided upstanding tabs defining slots 4 through which a slide plate can move.
The slide 5 in Figure 2 has holes 6 arranged to coincide with the central bore holes of the face plate 2. The holes 6 of the slide are larger than the bore holes in the face plate.
When the bore holes and the holes in the slide coincide, this is the open position and water can issue from the central bore holes of the face plate. The slide has a curve to conform to the longitudinal curve of the face plate In Figure 3, the slide has been moved so that the central bore holes are covered, thus water issuing from the other bore holes will have a greater trajectory.
The hinged plate in Figures 4 and 5 accomplishes the same purpose by uncovering or covering the central bore holes. The plate ii has a resilient material 1 lea underneath, that effectively cuts off the water issuing from the central bore holes. The hinged plate has rounded protuberances or knobs 7 at the end away from the hinged end When the plate is pressed down, these protuberances or knobs push against arms 8 attached to the body of the nozzle, Figures 4 and 5, and then enter holes 8a, bored through these arms, thus securing the hinged plate. Arms 9 attached to the body of the nozzle, hold the pivot 10 for the hinged plate 11 Figures 6, 7 and 8 show a nozzle for use by fire fighting services. The head or top has a circular opening to conform to the bore of the nozzle with an extended portion 12 whose outer edge is straight - Figure 7, and at a right angle to a line drawn from the longitudinal axis of the tube 13 comprising the nozzle. The extended portion is slotted and the slot 14 is continued into the rounded part of the head. At the outer corners of the extended portion are round barrel type devices 15 holding spring activated pins 16.
The rounded edge of a face plate 18 having bores 19, Figure 8, is inserted into the slot 14 and pushed forward until the edges of the plate engage the spring activated pins 16, pushing them back. When the plate has been pushed fully forward in the slot, the activated pins spring out to hold the plate securely in place. In order to remove the face plate, the caps of the two barrel type devices 15 have to be pulled back at the same time to pull back the pins 16 and thus allow the face plate to be removed. As shown in Figure 6, the barrel type devices 17 used to connect the nozzle to a hose work on the same principle, thus providing a safety feature, as they cannot be accidentally activated.
