Abstract

233,000. Golby, F. W., (Libbey-Owens Sheet Glass Co.). Nov. 5, 1923. Forming plate glass.-A method of producing polished plate glass consists in drawing sheet glass. continuously from a tank furnace, cutting the continuous strip into separate sheets, and then grinding and polishing the surface of the separate sheets. The glass is produced in a continuous strip 3 by the process of drawing in which the strip is drawn vertically upwards from a draw-pot 1, and after passing around a bending-roller 5 travels in a horizontal direction through a lehr 7. The strip, as it emerges from the lehr, is cut into separate sheets 8 which are carried by conveyers 11 to the bevelling room 12 where the edges are bevelled to prevent subsequent chipping. The bevelled sheets are conveyed to any one of a series of grinding machines, which are of the kind described in Specification 228,609, [Class 60, Grinding or abrading &c.], where a light surface grinding is given to the sheets. The sheets after being ground on both surfaces are conveyed to polishing machines 24, also of the kind described in the Specification referred to.
