Abstract
A Printing Ink used in the process of Foil Stamping that when formulated to print onto a substrate by any ink printing machine will allow a Stamping Foil to attach, leaving the underlying substrate in unprinted areas Foil free. The formulation of the ink being compatible with the adhesive layer of a Stamping Foil. The Stamping Foil is applied using a featureless plate or roller employing heat and/or pressure to achieve adhesion to the printed design. The Ink Printed image hence becomes the foil printed image.
Description
A Printing Ink Used In The Process Of Foil Stamping.
This invention is a Printing Ink used in the process of Foil
Stamping.
Foil Stamping is a generic name which can encompass a whole variety of names to describe this particular process, to natne a few Gold Blocking, Foil Blocking, Hot Foil Stamping, Hot
Foiling.
The conventional means of Foil Stamping requires that a printing machine has attached to its heated platen a printing plate. The image being etched, engraved, moulded, into its face. A
Stamping Foil that relies on an adhesive layer for attachment to the substrate (printable material) is aligned in such a way on the machine, such that, the printing plate impresses against the Foil onto the substrate, activating the adhesive layer on the Foil, by the means of heat and/or pressure. The adhesive layer on the Foil must always be compatible with the substrate, to which it is to be attached. The resulting finished product, is a foiled product to the design of the printing plate.
According to the present invention there is provided a
Printing Ink that is used in the process of Foil Stamping.
This Printing Ink is used in conventional ink printing machines and applies the Printing Ink in the finished printed form on the substrate. This Printing Ink is specially formulated in such a way that it can be used on any printing machine or process, to name a few by example :- Flexographic, Lithographic,
Letter press, Dry-offset, etc. The Stamping Foil for the process will have an adhesive layer that recognises and adheres to the Printing
Ink, but does not attach to any part of the underlying substrate.
This facilitates a featureless printing plate foiling system,. for attachment of the Foil. A flat plate or roller of suitable construction could be used to apply the Stamping Foil, by means of heat and/or pressure. The finished printed article will consist of a substrate printed with the design in Printing Ink ~ and subsequently - foiled to achieve the same aesthetically finished foiled article, as achieved by standard Foil Stamping methods.
The Printing Ink can be modified in its composition, not only for the particular process used, but also made suitable for the different substrates and stock that the Printing Ink may have to be printed onto. The Printing Ink formula will also be altered to account for varying ambient conditions and in particular for the processes that employ the use of water as an inherent part of the printing process. The Printing Ink in its various forms will be suitable for use therefore, in conjunction with virtually any printing process onto many different substrates.
Claims (5)
1. A Printing Ink used in the process of Foil Stamping, to provide a means for a Stamping Foil to adhere to the Printing
Ink.
2. A Printing Ink used in the process of Foil Stamping, as in
Claim 1, wherein the Printing Ink is formulated and altered to print on any ink printing machine, to any form or design.
3. A Printing Ink used in the process of Foil Stamping, as in
Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the Printing Ink is printed onto a substrate in a permanent way.
4. A Printing Ink used in the process of Foil Stamping, as
Claimed in any preceding Claim wherein the Printing Ink forms the component to which the Stamping Foil attaches, leaving the underlying substrate foil free.
5. A Printing Ink used in the process of Foil Stamping, as
Claimed in any preceding Claim wherein the Printing Ink allows the attachfnent of Stamping Foils of a full spectrum of colours, shades, tints, hues & effects.
