Abstract

A stamping foil for security labelling purposes comprises a flexible backing sheet, a marking layer of a verifiable or active substance and a release layer intermediate the backing sheet and the marking layer. The marking layer preferably includes a photochromic ink.

Description

STAMPING FOIL The present invention relates to stamping foils.
A stamping foil is a flexible sheet, typically of a plastics material, which is coated with a release layer which is itself coated with a marking material such as an ink. In use, a heated metal die is applied to the rear surface of the stamping foil and pressure is applied. The heat and pressure together cause the release layer (typically wax) to loosen the marking material from the flexible sheet. The pressure of the die presses the marking material onto a substrate to be marked, leaving it deposited there.
Some stamping foils make use of cold dies, rather than heated dies, but the principle is essentially the same.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a stamping foil which can be used for security labelling purposes.
According to the present invention there is provided a stamping foil comprising a flexible backing sheet, a marking layer of a verifiable or active substance and a release layer intermediate the backing sheet and the marking layer.
Preferably, the active substance comprises a photochromic ink or marking material, either naturally colourless or coloured by the addition of pigmentation.
Suitable photochromic inks include, for example, a flexographic ink or those inks described in GB patent application 2214191 and European application 327788.
The marking layer may include bonding agents to assist in the bonding of the marking layer onto the article to be marked. Alternatively, the marking layer could be coated with a suitable adhesive. The release layer may be wax or wax-based.
Traditional stamping foils, for the transfer of conventional non-security designs onto an article, normally make use of dyes in the release layer. In the present proposal, on the other hand, dyes in the release layer are not used but instead there is a separate marking layer (for example a pigmented or metallic material) on top of the release layer. This could be placed there by any conventional printing process, such as lithographic printing or ink jet printing. It would also be possible to apply the marking layer by means of pen/pencil-type applicators or even by immersing the backing sheet in the active substance or by passing it through a roller system which coats the surface. The substance could also be brushed on.
Instead of or in addition to photochromic ink, the verifiable or active substance could include any one or more of the following: ultraviolet reactive inks or marking materials, fluorescent inks or marking materials, magnetic inks or marking materials, phosphor-type inks or marking materials, and other rare earth minerals.
The invention may be carried into practice in a number of ways, but in one exemplary embodiment comprises a plastics material backing sheet having a wax-based release layer thereon. Printed onto this release layer, by lithographic means, is a printing ink incorporating photochromic compounds and inhibiters.
