Abstract
The alarm is connected to a vehicle exhaust system so that when the vehicle is started the exhaust gases cause an audible alarm to be produced. The alarm consists of a cylindrical block housing one or more whistles 2 and provided with a locking mechanism (3, Fig.2). The body also has locating channels 4 which, in use, align with locating lugs (5, Fig.3) in an exhaust tail pipe adapter having an internal locking ring (7). The locking mechanism has locking tabs 6 which can be engaged and retracted by a key. The main body is inserted into the adapter until it is flush with the end and is then locked with the key which engages the tabs behind the locking ring. Alternatively, the alarm is built into the exhaust system and is operated by an electrical or mechanical mechanism to divert the exhaust gases from the main exhaust system to the alarm device.
Description
DESCRIPTION OF THE "BANSHEE" A UTOMOTIVE SECURITYDEICE
This is an automotive security device that is fitted to the exhaust system of a motor vehicle and emits an alarm signal when the engine is started
The main body of the device as illustrated infig 1, consists of a cylindrical block, which houses one or a number of whistles 2, fiftedfrom the rear of the main body, and also the locking mechanism 3. The main body would have locating channels, 4 which would align with the exhaust pipe adapter locating lugs 5. The locking mechanism as illustrated infig 2 would consists of a number of locking tabs 6, which would be engaged and retracted by a key. All the locking components and mating pans would be produced from suitable high grade corrosion resistant materials. The main body would be inserted into the adapter fig 3 until it is flush with the end, and locked with a key which would engage the locking tabs 6 behind the internal locking ring 7, therefore preventing removal by leverage afterfitting.
The device also consists of an exhaust tailpipe adapter as illustrated infig 3 which aftaches to the original exhaust pipe 9 by a suitable method. The adapter consists of a cylindrical tube with an internal locking ring 7 located in side for the attachment of the main body and also having locating lugs 5 to ensure the main body is inserted correctly. This adapter would be manufactured in various sizes to accommodate the different exhaust system sizes.
This device can befifted at the vehicles manufacturers factory or by DIY. It could befitted to any part of the exhaust system, but ifDIY, it could befifted to the tail pipefor easier access by the vehicle owner, to arm and disk Iffitted by the vehicle manufacturers, it would be incorporated into the original exhaust system as illustrated infig 4 and operated by a suitable mechanism which would divert the exhaust gases from the main exhaust system into this device. To arm and disarm this model would be either by an electrically of mechanically operated mechanism
Once the devicefig I is installed, the vehicle can no longer be started without causing the internal whistles 2 to sound, thus alerting anyone in ear shot As an addition, a hinged end cap as illustrated infig 5 can befitted to obscure the whistles and lock
If the vehicle has a multiple exhaust system, a number of these devises could be fitted, alternatively, blanking plugs could befitted in the same way to the exhaust outlets, thereby diverting all the exhaust gases through the device or devices
To disarm this device simply insert the key, and rotate to the unlock position which will retract the locking tabs 6from the internal locking ring 7, allowing the main body to be removed
This is a simple, uncomplicated automotive security device which attaches to the original exhaust system, which would contribute to discouraging the unlawful driving away of vehicles. This device is not effected by any movement within or outside the vehicle as with electronic alarms
This device could also be used in adFtion with the vehicles own electronic alarm system for added security.
