Abstract
An apparatus for insulating a water tank (1) in a roof space comprising a tent (7,8) which, when in use, is placed over said water tank (1) and spaced therefrom.
Description
Apparatus for insulating a Water Tank in a Roof Space
This invention relates to an apparatus for insulating a water tank in a roof space, a water tank in a roof space protected by said apparatus, and a method of insulating a water tank in a roof space.
House builders are required to build houses with good insulation properties. To this end, roof installation is mandatory. However, due to the good insulation properties between the upper floor of a house and the roof space area, there is a risk that water contained in a water tank and/or in the surrounding pipes in the roof space can freeze in cold weather despite being lagged.
The current practice to help prevent this problem is to remove insulating material from directly beneath the water tank, thereby allowing heat to conduct through the ceiling into the roof space. However, this is not satisfactory in very cold weather.
Accordingly, there is provided an apparatus for insulating a water tank in a roof space comprising a tent which, when in use, is placed over said water tank and spaced therefrom.
Preferably, the upper most point of said tent is spaced at least 15 cm from said water tank and more preferably at least 25 cm from said water tank.
The tent may be of any convenient shape, for example it may be conical, cuboid, cylindrical or hemispherical.
Advantageously, said tent has at least one side and the at least one side is spaced at least 10 cm from said water tank and preferably at least 15 cm therefrom.
Preferably, said tent is made of a material substantially impervious to air, for example polythene.
However this is not essential and for example, a closely woven material might also be suitable.
Advantageously, said apparatus comprises hanging means by which said tent can be hung from a rafter. Such hanging means may comprise, for example a tab attached to the top of said tent and provided with an eyelet or a ring secure to said tent. Alternatively, the tent may be supported by a frame for example, an endoskeleton or an exoskeleton.
Preferably, said tent includes fastening means for securing said tent in place.
Advantageously, said tent is provided with means for gaining access to said water tank, for example a lightening fastener such as VELCRO (RTM) or a zip.
Preferably, said apparatus comprises a grill and means to open and close said grill in response to the ambient temperature, or the temperature of the water in the water tank.
Advantageously, said grill is mounted is mounted in said tent.
The present invention also provides a water tank in a roof space protected by an apparatus in accordance with the present invention.
If desired, said water tank may be lagged and the upper most point of the tent is spaced at least 15cm from said lagging. However, it should be understood that lagging is not essential.
Advantageously, said water tank is lagged and the at least one side of the tent is spaced at least 10cm from said lagging.
In a preferred installation said water tank is mounted on a board, said board is mounted on bearers, said bearers rest on joists, and said tent is secured to said joists around said board.
Preferably, said tent is spaced from said board.
Advantageously, said tent is secured to said joists by staples.
Preferably, a grill is built into the ceiling below said water tank and inside said tent, the arrangement being such that, in use, said grill opens when one of the water in said water tank and said air in said tent is below a predetermined temperature and closes when one of the water in said water tank and the air in said tent is above a predetermined temperature.
Advantageously, said water tanks includes plumbing to supply water to said water tank and to supply water from said water tank to a point of use below said roof space, wherein said tent covers all or substantially all said plumbing.
The present invention also provides a method of insulating a water tank in a roof space which method comprises the step of providing said water tank with an apparatus according to the present invention.
For a better understanding of the present invention, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing in which the shows a perspective view of a water tank protected by an apparatus according to the present invention in a roof space.
Referring to the drawing there is shown a water tank 1 which is encased by a thermal insulating jacket 2. The thermal insulating jacket 2 has a top portion and a side portion which is held in position against the water tank with a tie 3.
The water tank 1 rests on a board 4 which in turn is supported on bearers 5. Bearers 5 rest on and are perpendicular to joists 6.
A sheet 7 of transparent polythene is disposed over and forms a tent about the water tank 1. The sheet 7 is hung from a rafter via a wire hanging unit 8 and at the lower edges is stapled to the joists 6 about edges of board 4 approximately 1 foot from the edges of board 4 to form a tent which surrounds (but does not touch) the water tank 1, the thermal insulating jacket 2 and the board 4.
The sheet 7 may be cut to fit around the joists 6.
The sheet 7 is provided with a slit 9 and VELCRO (RTM) tape stitched to the polythene either side of the slit 9 to facilitate access to the water tank 1.
The tent also encloses valves and pipe work which is adjacent the water tank and may also enclose a header tank for a radiator heating system.
Insulating material such as 6" thick glass fibre 10 rests on the upper surface of a ceiling (not shown) and is disposed between the joists 6 external to the base of the tent. Substantially all existing glass fibre between the joists 6 inside the tent is removed.
It is envisaged that a grill could be disposed in the ceiling within the tent, preferably with an automatic actuator to open the grill if the temperature in the tent approaches 0 C. This allows warm air beneath the ceiling to rise into the tent.
It is also envisaged that a grill could be disposed in the top of the tent and form part of the wire hanging unit 8, wherein the grill is able to open if the temperature within the tent rises above a predetermined level, for example 20"C.
Whilst the arrangement thus far described is preferred, other arrangements may be used, for example the sheet 7 may be stapled to the edges of the board 4 which may be perforate to allow warm air to enter the tent.
The sheet 7 may comprise an insulated quilt or two overlaying sheets 7 with spaced longitudinal joins, the gaps between the joins there formed may be filled with air in a similar fashion to a lilo. The tent is preferably impervious to the passage of air therethrough although this is not absolutely essential.
The sheet 7 may be provided with a zip in place of the VELCRO (RTM) tape and fitted during installation of the sheet 7 in a loft space. Each side of the zip is preferably provided with two wings which are parallel and connected thereto. The sides of the wings facing each other are provided with an adhesive. A slit 9 can be formed in the tent where desired and the wings of the zip pressed on to and about the edges of the sheet 7 either side of the slit 9.
