Abstract
A fish bait is described that is formed of two distinct parts. The first part 10a is soluble in water to release a flavour into the water to attract fish and the second part 20a is a boiled foodstuff containing a binder that is substantially insoluble, so as to remain intact after immersion in water. The two parts form a unitary spherical object resembling a conventional ball pellet or boilie.
Description
FISH BAIT
The present invention relates to fish bait and is particularly concerned with bait used by anglers fishing for large carp.
In order to attract carp to a stretch of water or "swim", it is known to use pellets that dissolve in the water over a period of typically thirty minutes, thereby releasing into the water a flavour that attracts the carp.
These pellets, which are commonly referred to as ball pellets because of their shape, are not bait in themselves in that they are not meant to be swallowed by the fish and they are not attached to a fishing line in any way. The ball pellets are intended purely to release a flavour to attract fish to the swim.
One type of bait that is used to catch carp is boiled bait, often termed "boilies" by anglers. Boilies outwardly resemble ball pellets in their appearance but they differ from them in their composition in that they are not soluble and it is important for them to remain intact as small balls attached to the fishing line. The foodstuff in the boilies, for example a mixture of semolina, fish meal, milk powder and flavouring, additionally includes an insoluble binder, such as egg albumin, which ensures that they retain their original consistency even after prolonged immersion in water.
The present invention in one aspect provides a fish bait for use by anglers formed of two distinct parts, the first part being soluble in water to release a flavour into the water to attract fish and the second part being a boiled foodstuff containing a binder that is substantially insoluble, so as to remain intact after immersion in water.
In accordance with a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a combined boiled bait and ball pellet for use by anglers, wherein the ball pellet and the boiled bait are separately formed and wherein one is formed as a solid body having a recess or bore for receiving the other.
In a further aspect of the invention, there is provided a soluble ball pellet for use by anglers shaped as a solid body having a recess or bore for receiving and retaining a boiled bait. The ball pellet may conveniently be formed as a shaped pill by compressing a dry powder.
In a still further aspect, the invention provides a boiled bait for use by anglers shaped as a solid body having a recess or bore for receiving and retaining a ball pellet.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 shows a conventional ball pellet,
Figure 2 shows a conventional ball of boiled bait, commonly termed a "boilie",
Figure 3 shows a first embodiment of a fish bait of the invention, which comprises a combined boiled bait and ball pellet, and
Figures 4 and 5 show two further embodiments of a fish bait of the invention.
The ball pellet in Figure 1 is a small ball 10 made of a compressed dry powder that dissolves in water to release a flavour into the water to attract carp to the swim. The dry powders used typically include semolina, fish meal, milk powder and flavouring. Such ball pellets are cast into the water to attract fish to the swim and they are not intended to be swallowed whole by the fish nor are they attached to a fishing line.
The boiled bait 20 of Figure 2 is outwardly similar in appearance to the ball pellet in that it comprises a small ball of about the same size and it too comprises foodstuffs such as semolina, fish meal, milk powder and flavouring. In the case of boiled bait, however, the mixture is boiled and egg is added to the mixture to act as an insoluble binder.
For this reason, a boilie does not dissolve in water but remains as an intact ball that carp will swallow whole. The boilie is attached to a fishing line and acts as bait. If it is swallowed by a fish, then the fish will at the same time draw into its mouth a line that also carried a barbed hook.
Commonly, an angler throws some ball pellets at a distance, for example using a catapult. Subsequently, when fish are attracted to the swim, the angler casts a line carrying a boilie as bait into the same swim.
There are however problems with this approach in that if fish are attracted to a swim but find no food on arrival (because the ball pellets have completely dissolved), then they will move on to find a richer supply of food. Another problem is that the ball pellets and the baited fishing line may not end up near each other in the water, for example because of inaccurate casting of the line. Fish would then be attracted by the ball pellets away from the bait on the fishing line.
To avoid these problems, the present invention provides a combined fish bait that comprises both a boiled bait and a ball pellet. In the embodiment of Figure 3, a recess is formed in the ball pellet 10a to receive a plug of boiled bait 20a. In the embodiment of Figure 4, the ball pellet 10b is formed with a through bore containing the plug 20b of boiled bait, while in Figure 5 the boiled bait is formed as a boilie 20c having a through bore into which a cylindrical ball pellet 10c is inserted.
The combined fish bait of the present invention can be used by an angler either in the same manner as a conventional ball pellet or in the same manner as a conventional boilie. That is to say the combined fish bait of the invention may either be cast into a swim to attract fish or it may be attached to a fishing line to act as bait.
When used as a bait, the soluble ball pellet component of the combined fish bait ensures that the fish is directly attracted to the boiled bait attached to the fishing line.
When used instead of a ball pellet, on the other hand, the combined fish bait of the invention ensures that fish will always find food on arrival at the location to which they have been attracted by the flavour emitted into the water by the soluble component of the bait. The presence of food in the swim will ensure that the interest of the fish is retained and that the fish do not move on in search of a better supply of food.
It will be appreciated that various modification may be made to the described preferred embodiments without departing from the scope of the invention as set out in the appended claims. In particular, the recipe for the boiled bait and the soluble ball pellet may be varied as desired and it is not essential for the ball pellet to be a compressed dry powder. It is only important that the bait should be formed of two parts, one dissolving to attract fish to the swim and the other remaining intact for the fish to consume as food.
While it would be possible to sell a combined bait and ball pellet to anglers, anglers may wish to combine the two on site. It is therefore sufficient to supply a ball pellet with a recess or bore into which the angler may insert a boiled bait or to supply a boiled bait with a bore or recess for receiving a ball pellet. This allows the angler to experiment with different combinations of ball pellets and bait.
