Coating-machines. - In sheetfastening machines of the kind wherein gum is applied to the sheets by gummers which receive gum from a roller rotating in a gum tank the gummers execute an approximately circular rocking motion, during which they rock towards the roller to take up ,gum, and, rocking back, deliver the gum to the sheet, after which they rock rapidly out of the path of the sheet-carrying table. Vertical arms 41, 42, Fig. 1, on a stationary shaft 40 support the gum tank 43 and provide bearings for a rotatable ehaft 44, to which are secured two levers 45, 46 carrying a bar 47 supporting gummers or dabbers 48 with gumcarrying edges 90. The circular rocking motion is given to the dabbers by rocking the shaft 44 by means of an arm 53 connected by a link 52 to a lever 49, which is pivoted on a shaft 15 and carries a roller 50 in contact with a cam 51 fixed on the shaft 2. The paper-table 13 is carried on an arm 14 mounted on the shaft 15 pivoted between the frame ends .of the machine. Inward and outward rocking motion is imparted to the paper-table 13 by a rocking arm 25, which is secured to the shaft 15 and carries a roller 26 working in a cam groove 27 in a cam 28 fixed on the shaft 2. In operating the machine, a sheet 89 is placed on the .auxiliary table 30, Fig. 2, and a treadle is actuated, whereupon the sheet is fed to the table 13 and beneath the guide 64, which is then lifted to enable the table to move inwardly to carry the edge. of the sheet against the gum carriers 90 where a strip of gum is applied. Hereupon the cam 51 becomes operative and rocks the gummers inwardly and upwardly to clear the inwardly moving table carrying the gummed sheet, allowing the sheet to be applied when the table reaches its highest position, as shown in Fig. 16. After the stitching is performed the cam disc 28 operates to swing the table 13 outwardlv in readiness to receive a fresh sheet from the slide 34, which has moved back to its original position. The gum roller 55 is rotated intermittently in the gum tank by a pawl-and-ratchet mechanism which is linked to the rocking lever 45 supporting the dabber bar 47. The operation of the gumming-device is independently controlled by means of a treadle 66 situated in front of the treadle controlling the driving-mechanism, and connected by a horizontal rod 65 and vertical link 68 to a hook 70 which is pivoted upon the shaft 40 and co-operates with a pin 92 fixed to the lever 45.
