Abstract

1,272,736. Wrapping machines/film feeding. J. B. DOVE Inc. 12 March, 1970 [3 April, 1969], No. 11820/70. Headings B8C and B8R. In a wrapping machine comprising a wrapping mechanism 14, 15 which pulls film 20 thereto from a loop of film trained about a tensioning roller 67 situated between a roller 68 and a stripper roller 66, the tensioning roller 67 is carried by a pair of pivoted spring biased arms 91 which pivot as the loop is depleted to cause a continuously driven chain 88 to engage a sprocket (86, Figs. 5, 6, not shown) and rotate the stripper roller 66 to withdraw film from a roll 29a and replenish the loop. The arms 19 are connected to a track arm 101 which carries a roller 103 abutting the lower end of a track link 122, the upper end of which is secured to a plate 111 which is pivotally mounted at 112 and which carries a chain guide assembly 106. When the loop is full the arms 91 cause the guide assembly 106 to hold the chain 88 clear of the sprocket (86). When the loop is depleted the arms 91 cause the chain guide assembly 106 to fall and allow the chain 88 to drop and engage the sprocket (86). The machine carries three rolls 29a, 30a, 31a of film mounted on repsective arbors 29, 30, 31 and selectively connectible to the stripper roller 66. Each arbor is equipped with an adjustable braking belt 33 to adjust the speed of rotation thereof. The stripper roller 66 has strips 83 of silicone sponge to assist friction gripping of the film. Each arbor 29 comprises a tube (40, Fig. 6) rotatably cantilevered to a fixed plate 26, and a roll of film is held on the tube by a pivoted shoe (47) which is pivotable through a slot (62) on the tube to engage the roll. The shoe (49) is pivoted by means of a rotary knob (54) at the free end of the tube. The wrapping mechanism comprises vertically movable elevators 14a, 14b, a dancer roller 15, and a draper roller 15a. In operation a conveyer 16 feeds an article on to the elevator 14b and relative movements of the elevators 14a, 14b and the dancer roller 15 result in the article being transferred to the elevator 14a and having a section of film folded therearound. The partially wrapped article is transferred to a table 17a which is part of an end folding and sealing mechanism 17.
