Abstract

A traffic bollard has a pedestal of polygonal cross-section, flexible retroreflective strips (6) being located between narrow projections (7) running along the corners of the polygon. This construction protects the strips from impact. The bollard is resiliently deformable and can recover its shape after being run over.

Description

BOLLARDS The present invention relates to a traffic bollard.
Such bollards are normally translucent and are intemally illuminated by an electric lamp.
It has been proposed to provide retroreflective material on the surface of a traffic bollard in order to dispense with the requirement for an electric lamp. However, retroreflective materials lose their retroreflective properties when subjected to even minor impacts.
Accordingly the present invention provides a traffic bollard having a recess andlor projections formed in an exterior surface thereof and a sheet of retroreflective material located in said recess or between said projections, the recess or projections being located and dimensioned to protect the retroreflective material against impact.
Preferably the recess or projections are arranged to prevent contact of the retroreflective material with a vehicle bumper in the event of a collision. For example the recess or the gap between the projections may be in the form of a strip which is transverse to the horizontal, preferably substantially vertical.
Preferably the sheet of retroreflective material is flexible. Preferably the bollard is resiliently deformable and preferably it can recover its shape after being run over, preferably without damage to the retroreflective material.
In one embodiment a plurality of such sheets of retroreflective material are located in respective recesses or between projections and are located sufficiently close together for retroreflected light from adjacent sheets to overlap.
Other preferred features are defined in the dependent Claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is described below by way of example only with reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings, wherein: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a traffic bollard in accordance with the invention, and Figure 2 is a section taken on ll-ll of Figure 1.
Refening to Figure 1, the bollard, which is in the form of a hollow plastics shell of EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer), EBA (ethylene-butyl acetate copolymer) or other suitably resilient polymer or copolymer, comprises a pedestal 1 and a generally circular flat display portion 2, on which a traffic sign 5 is formed by cutting out appropriate portions from vertical strips 3 of flexible retroreflective sheet material. In accordance with the invention, strips 3, which are 50 mm wide, are protected against impact of a vehicle bumper by projections 4 which are formed integrally in the part of the plastics shell which forms the display portion 2. The shell material is suitably of 4 to 6 mm thickness.
Projections 4 are suitably 12 mm wide, and project 7.5 mm in front of the surface of the retroreflective material strips 3 as indicated by dimension H.
The strips 3 of retroreflecting material are securely bonded to the shell by a suitable resilient adhesive.
The projections 4 thereby protect the retroreflective material against impact from any flat or nearly flat object having a width of greater than about 50 mm.
In the event that the bollard is knocked down by a vehicle, it is sufficiently resilient to substantially recover its shape and spring back to an upright position, the strips 3 of retroreflective material remaining intact owing to the protection of the projections 4.
The base 9 of the bollard is rectangular and is designed to fit over an existing illuminated mounting window for a conventional illuminated bollard.
Refening to the pedestal portion 1 of the bollard shown in Figure 1 and the corresponding section in Figure 2, it will be seen that this is in the form of a decadon, projections 7 similar to projections 4 being formed at the upright edges and serving to protect 50 mm wide strips 6 of flexible retroreflective sheet which are adhered to the faces of the octagon.
The retroreflective material used for strips 3 and 6 is suitably "Diamond Grade", obtainable from 3M, having a luminance characteristic of 10 cds/m2.
The invention is not restricted to the embodiment shown. In particular the invention extends to a bollard which is not in the form of a shell of polygonal cross-section but which comprises two or more mutually inclined flat or curved sides which form a part shell of generally arcuate cross-section, e.g. a 5-sided half shell notionally obtainable by cutting the shell of Figure a along its axis A.

Claims (11)

1. A traffic bollard having a recess and/or projections formed in an exterior surface thereof and a sheet of retroreflective material located in said recess or between said projections, the recess or projections being located and dimensioned to protect the retroreflective material against impact.
2. A bollard as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said sheet of retroreflective material is flexible.
3. A bollard as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, which is resiliently deformable and can recover its shape after being run over.
4. A bollard as claimed in any preceding Claim, wherein a plurality of such sheets of retroreflective material are located in respective recesses or between projections and are located sufficiently close together for retroreflected light from adjacent sheets to overlap.
5. A bollard as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 4, wherein said sheets are in the form of strips which are transverse to the horizontal.
6. A bollard as claimed in any preceding Claim wherein the luminance characteristic of said sheet(s) or retroreflective material is greater than 3 dim2.
7. A bollard as claimed in Claim 6, wherein said luminance characteristic is greater than 5 cd/m2
8. A bollard as claimed in any preceding Claim, which comprises a pedestal portion of polygonal cross-section having substantially vertical strips of said retroreflective material covering substantially the entire width of the polygon faces, the strips being separated by projections extending along the polygon edges.
9. A bollard as claimed in any preceding Claim, wherein said retroreflective material is cut into the form of a traffic sign.
10. A traffic bollard as claimed in any preceding Claim, which has no powered means of illumination.
11. A traffic bollard substantially as described hereinabove with reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing.
