Description

A TWO-STROKE INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE Description A two-stroke internal combustion engine (see Fig. 1) for which a patent is respectfully sought, of such format where the pistons are laid horizontally and two crankshafts are used so that the combustion chambers are formed in the crowns of each pair of pistons; hence, this engine has no cylinder heads.
The combustible petroil mixture is sump pressurised by web of crankshaft so that two transfer pipes feed one pump/injector which meters the double dose into the common chamber. The trigger to such injection from overhead cams/camshaft is itself connected by/from a central gear wheel. This gear wheel picks up its drive from each of two gears mounted to the end of both crankshafts. Single or twin starter motor/s also take Bendix type drive off these gear wheels.
Ignition is provided, as shown in Fig. 1, from above by twin or single spark at a point of approximate timing when the two pistons in each cylinder bore meet.
Exhaust gases are expelled below the engine through an exhaust manifold to atmosphere.
A single spigot shaft from point(pdrives either variable displacement hydraulic pump with reversible through-flow dividers to an hydraulic motor/brake related to each driven road wheel. Clearly, no gearbox, clutch or separate braking system is required in the closed loop hydrostatic drive system described. The alternative would be to use a conventional gearbox and clutch.

Claims (1)

  1. Claim 1
A horizontally opposed two-stroke internal combustion engine where more power is generated in less space by virtue of the fact that, where each pair of pistons meet, their respective crowns form a common combustion chamber, rendering cylinder heads or head superfluous.
Claim 2 A two-stroke internal combustion engine, as described in Claim 1, where, by means of a simple 3-gear train and single spigot (shown as Q2 in Fig. 1) provides the sole power take-up.
Claim 3 A two-stroke internal combustion engine as described in Claim 1 and Claim 2, where a single overhead camshaft actuates by cam a Lucas-type pump/injection meter into the centre of each cylinder where each pair of pistons meet to form the common combustion chamber.
The petroil mixture is assisted through two transfer pipes to siamesed inlet port by web of crankshaft action from two sumps simultaneously.
Claim 4 The burnt gases are discharged on port through each barrel via manifold to atmosphere.
Claim 5 An I.C. engine as described in claims 1, 2, 3 and 4 is without inlet or exhaust valves and is water cooled by preference and where power take-up is from single spigot (2).
