Abstract
231,087. Schoeke, M. Sept. 30, 1924. Spring wheels--Relates to wheels of the type in which coiled springs are arranged between a channel-shaped rim and the wheel felloe, the inner ends of the springs being secured to through bolts connected to the rim sides and the outer ends of the springs being connected to the felloe. According to the invention means are provided for cushioning road shocks, for making the wheel dust-proof, and for detachably fitting the rubber tyres. A two-part channel rim b, Fig. 1, is bolted to a disc a which forms the wheel centre. Helical springs c, coiled in pairs alternately in opposite, directions, are secured at their outer ends by plates d and bolts d<2> to the rim b, and at their inner ends to the sleeve e of, a bolt f passing through side-plates g<1>, g<2> A channel-shaped rim h is secured by spaced bolts i, passing through the side-plates g<1>, g<2> and through a ring k which detachably secures the rubber tyre l to the wheel. The plates g<1>, g<2> extend inwardly beyond the wheel felloe and are formed with annular grooves g' to hold packing g<4> in close contact with the disc to render the wheel dust-proof. In a modification, the wheel is formed of cast metal, preferably of aluminium, the springs are in the form of bent rods, and the packing rings are held in grooves in the wheel centre, the side-plates sliding over the packing. In the form shown in Fig. 3, groups of springs are equally spaced round the wheel, each group comprising oppositely curved springs between which is arranged a shockabsorber, formed by forked brackets m secured to the inner face of the wheel rim, and lugs n secured to the felloe and free to slide between the forks of the brackets. Within each lug is a rubber ring o secured to the bracket m by a pin. The wheel may be fitted with a splash-guard, comprising a conical rubber ring detachably bolted to the wheel.
