Abstract

Inductances.-A coil comprises a number of plain turns wound over pins B<2>, Fig. 2, each of which is preceded or followed by one or more zig-zag turns wound over and under the pins. The plain turns may lie, on the inside of the pins instead of the outside, being retained during winding by flat springs attached to the base of each pin. In the coil shown each plain turn A<1> is followed by a pair of zig-zag turns A<2> having their loops oppositely disposed. The pins may be curved to give the coil a substantially spherical form. Alternatively the coil may be cylindrical, rectangular, or D-shaped. After removal from the former, the coil may be bound with thread and varnished. Alternatively, the coil may be permanently mounted on its former. A variometer mav have its stator or rotor coils or both wound in this fashion. In the variometer shown in Fig. 5, the stator comprises truncated hemispherical windings C<7>, C<8> secured against ebonite end-rings C<1>, C<2> by L-shaped members C<9>. The rotor coils D<4>, D<5> are secured between an ebonite disc D<1> and end members D<6>, D' which are drawn together by a bolt. The rings C', C<2> are connected by metal plates C<3> which form bearings for spindle members secured to the disc D'. The spindles are provided with collars secured thereto by grub-screws; one collar abuts against its bearing plate and the other is separated therefrom by a spring washer. One spindle is provided with a knob and dial secured by a grub-screw. The adjacent turns of the rotor coils are connected together, and the end turns are connected to the two spindles. The adjacent turns of the stator coils are connected together and the end turns are connected respectively to a terminal C<12> and one metal plate C<3>. The other metal plate is connected to a terminal C<13>. The variometer is supported by feet C<7>. Thin semi-circular insulating strips C<5>, C<6> are fitted in grooves in the rings C<1>, C<2>.
