Abstract

A mixture suitable for printing onto a substrate to provide a luminescent coating thereon for use as a luminescent sign, comprises a luminescent powder, a varnish, and, optionally, a coloured ink, which may be printed by a silk-screen printing process to form a coating 4 on the substrate 2.

Description

LUMINESCENT MIXTURE The present invention relates to a luminescent mixture, to a substrate having such a mixture applied thereto and to a method of applying such a mixture to a substrate. The mixture of the invention is used in particular but not exclusively to form a luminescent coating for signs.
It is well known to provide signs which impart information to people which include fluorescent inks in order to make these particularly eye-catching. These signs have a high visibility when there is any available light; however, in darkness such signs are not visible. It is also known to provide articles with luminous or luminescent material allowing these to be seen in total darkness. For example, clocks and watches may include luminous dots on the dial and hands allowing one to tell the time in darkness. These luminous areas are however generally confined to very small dots or bands.
The present invention seeks to provide a mixture which can be applied in large areas in order to provide luminous signs, as well as to substrate provided with such a mixture, and to a method of applying such a mixture.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a mixture suitable for printing onto a substrate to provide a luminescent coating thereon, comprising a luminescent powder, a varnish, and, optionally, a coloured ink.
This mixture can readily be printed onto a substrate using conventional printing techniques, thereby allowing a large substrate area to be covered, in order to provide signs which are visible in the dark. The addition of a coloured ink means that the signs can if required be made highly visible in daylight.
Preferably, the mixture comprises from 5% to 95% by volume of luminescent powder, from 5% to 50% by volume of varnish and from 0 to 45% by volume of coloured ink.
According to a further aspect in the invention there is provided a luminescent sign comprising a substrate having a layer of luminescent material printed thereon comprising a mixture of a luminescent powder, a varnish, and optionally, a coloured ink.
The layer of luminescent material has preferably been applied thereto by a silk-screen printing process. The combination of the luminescent material and printing process is found to give a luminescent material of very high durability. The layer of luminescent material can alternatively be applied thereto by a spray-printing process.
The total thickness of the layer of luminescent material and substrate is preferably in the range O.llmm to lOmm.
The substrate may be selected from a wide variety of material including a metal plate, such as steel, iron, aluminium, brass, plastics such as PVC, polycarbonate or acrylate plastic.
In a further aspect, the present invention provides a method of applying a luminescent material to a substrate, comprising the steps of mixing a luminescent powder, a varnish, and, optionally, a coloured ink and applying these to the substrate by a printing process. The printing process is preferably a silk-screen printing process, or alternatively a spray-printing process. The luminescent powder and varnish are preferably first mixed together, followed by addition of a coloured ink to the mixture. The use of conventional printing techniques means that the material can be readily applied to a wide variety of different substrates in any desired pattern.
An embodiment of the present invention is now described, by way of example only, with reference to the following drawing in which: Figure 1 shows a portion of a luminescent sign in accordance with an embodiment of the invention.
As shown in the figure, the luminescent sign in accordance with the invention comprises a substrate 2 having a layer 4 of luminous material printed thereon. The substrate 2 may comprise a wide variety of material such as a thin sheet of steel, iron, aluminium or brass, or a plastics material such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polycarbonate or acrylate plastic. The luminous material 4 comprises mixture of a photo-luminescent powder, a varnish, and preferably, but not essentially, a coloured ink. Overlying the luminescent layer 4 there is provided a protective releasable layer 6 of a thin transparent plastic material such as polyvinyl chloride. This is preferably adhered onto the luminescent layer shortly after its application to the substrate in order to protect this layer, and is removed only once the sign is installed in place.
The luminescent material is formed of a mixture of a luminescent powder, a varnish and a printing ink of bright colour, wherein the light powder is present at from 5% to 95% by volume, printing ink is present at from 45k to 0t by volume and the varnish is present at from 50% to 5% by volume. An example of a suitable luminescent powder is a phosphorescent pigment having a particle size of 21cm, specify gravity of 4.1 comprising zinc sulphide and copper, this giving a yellow-green emission colour. Such a material has a high initial brightness, long afterglow and good light stability. Table 1 shows examples of possible compositions for the mixture, with the relative proportions indicated as percentages by volume.

Depending on the eventual location of the substrate an adhesive material may then be applied to a rear of the substrate to allow this to be readily affixed onto a wall or door or other surface and this is then covered by a conventional waxed release-type paper. A clear protective film is applied to a front surface of the substrate in order to cover the luminescent layer. When the sign is to be affixed to an appropriate surface or object the release paper is removed and the sign simply pressed into place.
Signs formed as described provide particularly effective eye-catching signs, being highly visible in both daylight and darkness, and therefore particularly effective as signs to indicate emergency exits or as signs for advertising purposes.
