Abstract

1,270,103. Uses of luminescence.- POST OFFICE. 2 April, 1969 [2 April, 1968], No. 15770/68. Heading C4S. [Also in Division B6] A tape for use as ink ribbon in printing apparatus (see Division B6) comprises a woven base impregnated with a suspension of a powder, which may be phosphorescent or fluorescent, in a medium comprising constituents selected from the group comprising natural and synthetic waxes, resins, polymers and plasticizing agents, the properties of the medium being such that it is solid and has a surface with poor adhesive properties at normal atmospheric temperatures, and is fluid and tacky within the range of from 60-90‹ C. In an example, an amino-resin phosphor made in accordance with a method described in Specification 870,504 by reacting cyanuric acid with paraformaldehyde in the presence of about 1% carbazole-3-sulphonic acid as activator, is powdered to a particle size of about 3 Á, and suspended in a solution of shellac in alcohol in the proportions 5 g. phosphor, 20 g. shellac, 75 g. alcohol. Cotton ribbon is passed through a bath containing the suspension, solvent being removed by hot air after each pass of the tape. In a second example the tape is passed through a bath containing a melt comprising 25% by weight of the above amino-resin phosphor, 12¢% of polystyrene resin and 62¢% diphenyl at 90‹ C. This mixture may be diluted with toluene and the former method of impregnation employed. Code marking applications are instanced as applied to postal items e.g. letters and parcels, and tins, packets, cartons, tickets or cheques.
