Abstract

230,760. Bell, W. T., and Bretherton, F. J. Nov. 28, 1924. Rollers, road.-A tandem roller is so constructed that there are no protuberances on one side beyond the ends of the rollers. The frame A has a steering-post socket B at one end and the rear axle D at the other, the rear end being on one side only of the rear roller E. It carries the boiler and firebox F, steam engine G, the driving- gear, the steering-apparatus, and the driver's seat H, the weight being equally distributed over the two rollers. An oil engine may be employed instead of a boiler and steam engine. The axle of the front roller C is carried by an arm J on the steering post I which is actuated by means of a hand-wheel S, rod P, worm N, and toothed quadrant R. The driving-gear may include a gear wheel L meshing with a toothed ring M on the roller E. The rollers may be secured on their axLes by nuts within them. The roller E may have bearings for half its length only, a water tank W being suspended within it on a reduced part of the axle D; or the tank may be suspended from a sleeve of the roller surrounding the axle.
