Description

ROLLER ASSEMBLY FOR A SUITCASE The invention relates to a roller assembly, more particularly to a roller assembly for a suitcase.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, a conventional roller assembly for a suitcase is shown to include a horizontal outer mounting plate (11), a roller unit (13) , a horizontal inner mounting plate (12) and two sets of locking bolts and nuts (15, 16). As illustrated, the outer mounting plate (11) is adapted to be disposed outside of a side wall (2) of the suitcase and has a pair of mounting holes (112) formed therethrough. The roller unit (13) is mounted to the outer mounting plate (11) in such a manner that a lower portion (14) of the same is exposed to an exterior of the mounting plate (11) and rotatable about a vertical pivot (111) . The inner mounting plate (12) is adapted to be disposed inside the suitcase so as to abut against an inner surface of the side wall (2), and has a pair of mounting holes (122) formed therethrough.
The locking bolts (15) extend through the through-holes (21) of the side wall (2) and the mounting holes (122, 112) of the inner and outer mounting plates (12, 11) so as to be threaded in the nuts (16), thereby retaining the roller unit (13) on the suitcase.
A drawback of the conventional roller assembly resides in that the assembler has to use two hands simultaneously, one for holding the nut (16) while the other for rotating the locking bolt (15) by means of a screwdriver, in order to attach the conventional roller assembly to the suitcase, thus inconveniencing the assembly thereof.
There is therefore a need for a roller assembly which can be assembled onto a suitcase with the use of a single hand.
This invention provides a roller assembly for a suitcase, the suitcase having a side wall with two throughholes formed therethrough, the roller assembly comprising: a horizontal outer mounting plate abutting against an outer surface of he side wall and having a pair of mounting holes formed therethrough; a roller unit mounted to the outer mounting plate and rotatable about a vertical axis; a horizontal inner mounting plate abutting against an inner surface of the side wall and having a pair of mounting holes formed therethrough;; a positioning plate attached to the outer mounting plate in such a manner that the positioning plate has a central opening through which the roller unit extends so that a lower portion of the roller unit is exposed to an exterior of the positioning plate, two threaded holes formed in a top surface of the positioning plate, and two generally parallel retaining flanges which respectively project upward from two opposite side portions of the positioning plate and which respectively abut against two opposite peripheral surfaces of the outer mounting plate so as to prevent relative movement therebetween; and a pair of locking bolts extending through the throughholes of the side wall, and the mounting holes of the inner and outer mounting plates so as to be threaded in the threaded holes of the positioning plate, thereby retaining the roller unit on the side wall of the suitcase.
Accordingly, the roller assembly for a suitcase according to embodiments of the invention ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ includes a horizontal outer mounting plate, a roller unit, a horizontal inner mounting plate, a positioning plate, and a pair of locking bolts. The suitcase has a side wall with two through-holes formed therethrough.
The outer mounting plate abuts against an outer surface of the side wall and has a pair of mounting holes formed therethrough. The roller unit is mounted to the outer mounting plate and is rotatable about a vertical axis. The inner mounting plate abuts against an inner surface of the side wall and has a pair of mounting holes formed therethrough. The positioning plate is attached to the outer mounting plate in such a manner that the positioning plate has a central opening through which the roller unit extends so that a lower portion of the roller unit is exposed to an exterior of the positioning plate, two threaded holes formed in a top surface of the positioning plate, and two generally parallel retaining flanges which respectively project upward from two opposite side portions of the positioning plate and which respectively abut against two opposite peripheral surfaces of the outer mounting plate so as to prevent relative movement therebetween.
The locking bolts extend through the through-holes of the side wall, and the mounting holes of the inner and outer mounting plates so as to be threaded in the threaded holes of the positioning member, thereby retaining the roller unit on the suitcase.
Since the outer mounting plate and the positioning plate cannot rotate relative to each other, the assembler can use a single hand to thread the locking bolts in the threaded holes of the positioning member.
Other features and advantages of the present invention will become more apparent in the following detailed description of the preferred embodiment with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an exploded view of a conventional roller assembly shown together with a side wall of a suitcase; Figure 2 is a sectional view of the conventional roller assembly mounted to the side wall of a suitcase; Figure 3 is an exploded view of the preferred embodiment of a roller assembly of the present invention shown together with a side wall of a suitcase; and Figure 4 is a sectional view of the preferred embodiment of the present invention when mounted to the side wall of a suitcase.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, the preferred embodiment of a roller assembly for a suitcase according to this invention includes a horizontal outer mounting plate (3), a horizontal inner mounting plate (4), a positioning plate (5), a pair of locking bolts (6), and a roller unit (32). The suitcase has a side wall (2A) with two through-holes (21A) formed therethrough.
As illustrated, the outer mounting plate (3) is disposed outside of the suitcase to abut against an outer surface of the side wall (2A) and has a pair of mounting holes (34) formed therethrough. The roller unit (32) is mounted to the outer mounting plate (3) and is rotatable about a vertical pivot (31).
The inner mounting plate (4) is disposed inside the suitcase to abut against an inner surface of the side wall (2A) and has a pair of mounting hole (41) formed therethrough.
The positioning plate (5) is attached to the outer mounting plate (3) in such a manner that the positioning plate (5) has a central opening (51) through which the roller unit (32) extends so that a lower portion (33) of the roller unit (32) is exposed to an exterior of the positioning plate (5), two threaded holes (521) formed in a top surface of the positioning plate (5), and two generally parallel retaining flanges (53) which respectively project upward from two opposite side portions of the positioning plate (5) and which respectively abut against two opposite peripheral surfaces (3A) of the outer mounting plate (3) so as to prevent relative movement therebetween.
The locking bolts (6) extend through the throughholes (21A) of the side wall (2A), and the mounting holes (41), (34) of the inner and outer mounting plates (4, 3) and are threaded in the threaded holes (521) of the positioning plate (5), thereby attaching the roller unit (32) to the suitcase.
Note that during the threading operation of the locking bolts (6) to the holes (521) of the positioning plate (5), the outer mounting plate (3) and the positioning plate (5) cannot rotate relative to each other, so that the assembler can use a single hand to thread the locking bolts (6) in the threaded holes (521) of the positioning plate (5).
In summary, therefore, embodiments of the invention provide a roller assembly for a suitcase including horizontal outer and inner mounting plates (3, 4), a roller unit (32), a positioning plate (5), and two locking bolts (6). The outer mounting plate (3) abuts against a side wall (2) of the suitcase. The roller unit (32) is mounted to the outer mounting plate (3) and is rotatable about a vertical axis (31). The inner mounting plate (4) abuts against an inner surface of the side wall (2).The positioning plate (5) is attached to the outer mounting plate (3) in such a manner that the plate (5) has a central opening (51) through which the roller unit (32) extends so that a lower portion (33) of the roller unit (32) is exposed to an exterior of the plate (5), two threaded holes (521) formed in a top surface of the plate (5), and two retaining flanges (53) which respectively project from two opposite side portions thereof and which abut against opposite peripheral surfaces of the outer mounting plate (3) to prevent relative movement therebetween. The bolts (6) extend through the through-holes (21A) of the side wall (2), and the mounting holes (41, 34) of the inner and outer mounting plates (4, 3), and are threaded in the threaded holes (521) of the positioning plate (5). The embodiment also provides a suitcase (not shown) having one or more (e.g. two or four) such roller assemblies mounted thereon.
The terms "vertical", "horizontal", "upper", "lower" etc.
generally relate to the orientation of the assembly as mounted and in use on a suitcase.
