Abstract

A fitting for a glass door, comprises two body parts 10, 11 which together define a slot 12 for receiving the edge of a glass panel. Bolts 18, 19 and 20 (Fig 1) are provided to fasten the body parts together. Cover plates 30 and 31 are provided for covering the body parts and bolts. Each cover plate has opposed hook-shaped parts 33, 34 for receiving opposed edge portions of a respective body part and there is a leaf spring 36 between one of the hook-shaped parts and the adjacent edge portion of its respective body part. This spring 36 allows the hook-shaped parts to be hooked over the opposed edge portions of the body part and holds the cover plate in place on its respective body part. The hook-shaped parts are separate from and secured to the cover plate and have spring portions 35 which bear against a front face of a body part when the cover is fitted thereto. <IMAGE>

Description

Fittings for alass doors This invention relates to fittings, commonly referred to in the trade as patch fittings, for glass doors and more particularly for glass entrance doors.
Patch fittings can be attached to the glass panels of glass entrance doors or to adjacent glass panels and incorporate hinge parts, locks or keepers for locks.
Commonly, known patch fittings comprise two die cast metal body parts, which define a slot between them for receiving the edge of a glass panel and which support part of a hinge or a lock, and two covers for the two body parts.
Each cover is typically formed of stainless steel and is of dished form having a base which covers the major exposed surface of a respective body part and flanges at opposite sides and ends of the base. The cover plates of known patch fittings are attached to respective body parts by two pins, one at each end of the body part. One of these pins is depressible against the urging force of a spring and the pins extend through apertures in the end flanges of the cover plate. However, this does not hold the cover plate firmly in place and it is also common practice to use small pads of double sided adhesive tape between the cover plate and body part in addition to the pins. Even this is not entirely satisfactory as the cover can still move relative to the body part.
In seeking to mitigate this drawback, the present invention provides a fitting for a glass door, comprising two body parts, which together define a slot for receiving the edge of a glass panel, means for fastening the body parts together, and two cover plates for covering the body parts and the fastening means, each cover plate having opposed hook-shaped parts for receiving opposed edge portions of a respective body part and there being a leaf spring between one of the hook-shaped parts and the adjacent edge portion of its respective body part when the cover plate is fitted thereto for allowing the hook-shaped parts to be hooked over the opposed edge portions of the body part and for holding the cover plate in place on its respective body part.
Advantageously, each cover plate has at least two further leaf springs which bear against a front face of a body part when the cover plate is fitted thereto.
Preferably, in the latter case, the hook-shaped parts parts are separate from and secured to the cover plates and the further leaf springs are integral with the hookshaped parts.
Preferably, the hook-shaped parts extend along at least substantially the entire length of opposite ends of the cover plate.
Preferably, each cover plate has flanges at opposite ends and along at least one side. In this case, the hookshaped parts are preferably inside the flanges.
Conveniently, the first mentioned leaf spring is connected to its respective body part. In this case, the first mentioned leaf spring is, preferably, connected to its respective body part intermediate its ends and its ends extend away from the body part at an angle thereto.
Preferably, confronting portions of the two body parts are provided with elastomeric material to grip the glass panel.
The fitting may also comprise part of a lock or hinge connected to one of the body parts.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of part of one embodiment of a fitting according to the invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view showing a bracket supporting a hinge pin instead of a bearing, on a larger scale; Figure 3 shows a part of a glass panel shaped to receive the fitting shown in Figure 1, on a smaller scale, Figure 4 is a bottom plan view showing the fitting of Figure 1 secured to a glass panel and one cover plate in place and the other cover plate about to be fitted, Figure 5 is a view of the inside of one of the cover plates, Figure 6 is a section taken along line VI - VI of Figure 5, and Figure 7 is a sectional view of one of the hook-shaped parts in the cover plate.
Referring now to the drawings, the fitting shown therein is commonly referred to as a patch fitting and is for glass entrance doors. It is attached either to the door panel itself or to an adjacent glass panel and supports part of a hinge or lock.
The fitting comprises two die cast body parts 10 and 11 which together define between them a slot 12 for receiving the edge of a glass panel 13. A bracket 14 is connected to the body part 10 by two threaded bolts 15 and supports a bearing 16 of low friction material, such as nylon or PTFE. The bearing 16 forms one part of a hinge and cooperates with a pin 17 supported by a similar bracket connected to a like fitting (see Figure 2).
Alternatively, a part of a lock may be connected to the body part 10.
The body parts 10 and 11 are of generally similar platelike form, but the body part 10 includes an integral block 40 which defines the edge of the slot 12 and which supports the bracket 14. The bracket 14 can be supported on either side of the block 40.
Those confronting portions of the body parts 10 and 11 which define the slot 12 have adhered thereto sheet rubber material which grips the glass panel 13 when the body parts 10 and 11 are secured together.
The body parts 10 and 11 are secured together by three threaded bolts 18, 19 and 20. The bolt 18 co-operates with internally threaded bosses 21 which project inwards from the inner faces of the body parts 10 and 11 and which in use extend into an aperture 22 in the glass panel 13.
The bolt 19 co-operates with an internally threaded hole 23 in the body part 10 and in the block 40 and with an internally threaded hole 24 in the body part 11 and in a lug 25 which projects from the inner surface of the body part 11 and which fits in slot 26 in the block 40 . The bolt 20 cooperates with an internally threaded hole 27 in the body part 10 and in the block 40 and with an internally threaded boss 28 which projects from the inner face of the body part 11 and which fits in recess 29 in body part 10.
The fitting also comprises two cover plates 30 and 31 for covering the body parts 10 and 11, the bracket 14 and the bolts 15, 18, 19 and 20 after the body parts have been secured to the glass panel 13.
The cover plates 30 and 31 are typically cold formed from stainless steel and are of dished, rectangular shape, having flanges 32 at opposite ends and opposite sides, although one of the side flanges has a cut out (not shown).
Hook-shaped parts 33 and 34 are provided at opposite ends of each cover plate inside the end flanges 32. These parts are separate from and secured to the cover plate 30, 31. They are each provided with at least one, and as shown two, integral leaf springs 35 which press against the outer face of a respective body part 10, 11 when the cover plate is connected thereto.
The hook formation of the part 33 is deeper than the hook formation of the part 34.
A leaf spring 36 is secured to one end of each body part 10, 11 by an upset rivet (not shown) formed as an integral part of the body part. Opposite ends of the spring 36 are turned outwards at an acute angle to the body part.
In order to fit a cover plate 30, 31 over a body part 10, 11, the hook-shaped part 33 is first hooked over the end of the body part provided with the leaf spring 36 and the spring 36 is then compressed while hooking the hook-shaped part 34 over the other end of the body part.
The spring 36, together with the springs 35, hold the cover plate 30, 31 firmly in place on the body part 10, 11.
The above embodiment is given by way of example only and various modifications will be apparent to persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention defined by the appended claims.
