Abstract
230,276. Miller, W. J. March 18, 1924. Blowing. - A transferring or take-off mechanism for use in a glassware forming machine has a suction device for gripping the open end of the glass article. The device consists of a casting 1, Fig. 1, having a flanged lower portion 3 whose inner edge is recessed to fit the top edge of the parison B or other article to be gripped. The casting is connected by a ball and socket joint 6 with a. stem 7, air passages 19, 24 making connection between the space 11 within the flange and a flexible pipe 27 which is connected with the vacuum tank. A circular plate 9 is mounted within the head by a screwed stem 10, and a passage 13 closed by a ball valve 16 is open at one end to the atmosphere and at the other end to the space below the plate 9. The stem 7 encloses a valve 29 which, when turned, shuts off the passage 24 from the tube 27 and connects it with the atmosphere through a port 28. The device is shown in Fig. 4 in conjunction with a pneumatically operated mechanism for transferring parisons from a blank mould D to a blow mould F of a double-table forming-machine. The valve in the stem 7 is operated by a winged head 41 that makes contact at appropriate times with stops 42, 44 fixed on the machine. The stop 42 turns the valve to permit air to be sucked from the head 1, and the stop 44 turns the valve to connect the passage 24, Fig. 1, with the atmosphere, or a source of higher pressure, in order to detach the parison from the head. The ball valve 16, which is adjustable, prevents the pressure within the parison falling to a point which would cause the parison to collapse. In a modified construction, the plate 9 is replaced by a block which extends downwards within the parison and is suitably shaped to engage its inner surface.
