Abstract
230,127. Wood, W. Aug. 19, 1924. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Combined hand and foot driving-mechanism.- Foot propulsion is assisted by oscillating handlebars, which, by means of wires, rods, &c. drive free-wheels on a supplementary axle, situated near the main crank axle, and connected independently to the axle of the rear driving-wheel. Fig. 1 is an elevation of divided handle-bars a, b, supported by a fork h at the head of the steering- column j, and connected by plates y. The bars drive, by their wedge-shaped ends x, a grooved centre portion of a driving-pin f. As shown in Fig. 3, the handle-bars drive separate pins f, g, the centre portions d, e of which are cylindrical and pivoted on a pin 2 carried by a support k and are driven by forked ends of the handle-bars which embrace them. The driving-pins may be connected by a pin 3. Pairs of wires, attached by adjustable washers n to each driving-pin, are connected to chains which, after passing around sprockets on the supplementary axle, are coupled together by a wire passing over a pulley; springs may be substituted for the wire and pulley, or provided additionally, for returning the chain. The supplementary axle is carried by a bracket, either integral with, or clamped to, the down tube of the cycle frame, and has its chain-wheel on the side opposite to the ordinary chain-wheel. The top bar of the cycle frame may be slotted to allow the wires to pass, or a pair of bars may be provided, the wires passing between them.
