Abstract

A lock which is able to lock a gearshift lever 3 or a steering shaft of an automobile or a steering head tube of a bicycle includes a first half housing 1 and a half second housing 2 provided with a lock 21 to wrap around the gearshift lever or shaft and fixed tightly with screws. The lock has a vertical push rod 22 combined with a lateral slide rod 23. The slide rod pushes forward the lateral rod to move into a lateral hole 32 in the gearshift lever to stop the lever from moving when the lock is locked to extend the push rod down.

Description

VERSATILE LOCK BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention concerns a versatile lock, particularly one possible to apply on the gearshift lever or the shaft of the steering wheel of an automobile or the head tube of the handle of a bicycle, preventing any one of them from rotating, and thus preventing the automobile or the bicycle from stolen.
Nowadays automobile, motorcycle and bicycle locks are widely used to prevent automobiles, motorcycles and bicycles from stolen, and many, many kinds of locks have been devised and are on market, having different advantages and disadvantages.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention has an object to offer a versatile lock having a lock provided with a push rod formed at its lower and to be pushed down in locking, a slide rod laterally connected with the push rod to be moved forward to push a lateral rod to insert in a lateral hole in the gearshift lever of an automobile in locking the gearshift lever from moving to change gears.
Another object is to offer a versatile lock possible to apply to lock the gearshift lever or the shaft of the steering wheel of an automobile.
Another object is to offer a versatile lock possible to apply to lock the head tube of the handle of a bicycle.
A versatile lock in the present invention includes a first half housing and a second half housing to wrap around the gearshift lever or the shaft of the steering wheel of an automobile, the second half housing having a lock provided with a push rod formed at a lower end to extend down in locking to push a slide rod forward to push a lateral rod to insert in a lateral hole in the gearshift lever so that the gearshift lever is stopped from moving to change gears.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS The invention will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, whererin: FIG. 1 an exploded perspective view of a first embodiment of an automobile gearshift lock in the present invention; FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the first embodiment of an automobile gearshift lock in the present invention; FIG. 3 is an upside cross-sectional view of the first embodiment of an automobile gearshift lock in the present invention; FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the first embodiment of an automobile gearshift lock in the present invention, showing it being unlocked; FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional view of the first embodiment of an automobile gearshift lock in the present invention, showing it being locked; FIG. 6 is a cross-sectional view of a second embodiment of the automobile gearshift lock in the present invention;; FIG. 7 is a perspective view of the automobile gearshift lock in the present invention, locked around the shaft of the steering wheel of an automobile; and, FIG. 8 is a perspective view of the automobile gearshift lock in the present invention, locked around the head tube of the handle of a bicycle.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS A first embodiment of a versatile lock in the present invention, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, includes a first half houisng 1 and a second half housing 2 combined together.
Referring to FIGS. 3 - 5 in addition to FIGS. 1 and 2, the first half housing 1 and the second half housing 2 can be fixed around the gearshift lever 3 of an automobile by means of head-off screws 11 combining the both 1 and 2 tightly together. The second half housing 2 has a lock 21 vertically located, a push rod 22 formed at a lower end of the lock 21 and having a sloped end, a slide rod 23 having a sloped end to contact exactly with the sloped end surface of teh push rod 22 so that the slide rod 23 may be pushed forward by the push rod 22 in locking. The slide rod 23 has a round hole 231 in a front vertical end for a bead 241 fixed at a rear end of a lateral rod 24 to fit therein and to be moved forward by the slider rod 23.The lever body 31 of the gearshift lever 3 is bored with a lateral hole for the lateral rod 24 to insert therein to lock the gearshift lever 3 immovable when the slide rod 23 is moved forward by the push rod 22 in case of the lock 21 being locked.
Referring to FIGS. 1 and 4, the first half housing 1 and the second half housing 2 respectively have a plurality of projections 12 and 25 on their inner semicircular surfaces fitting in the gearshift lever 3 to tightly housing the lever 3. And a hollow sleeve 26 is fixed laterally on the inner semi-circular surface of the second half housing 2 at a corresponding spot to the lateral rod 24 and protruding in the gearshift lever 3 so that the lateral rod 24 may smoothly protrude the lateral hole 32 in the lever body 3.
Even if horizontal connection of the slide block 23 and the lateral rod 24 should have some error, the lateral rod 24 may touch an outer edge of the lateral hole 32 and the bead 241 may revolve a little in the round hole 231, letting the lateral rod 24 automatically move in the lateral hole 32. Then assembling error produced in this lock can be compensated to let locking operation done smoothly.
A second embodiment of an automobile gearshift lock in the present invention, as shown in FIG. 6, has the lock 21 of the second half housing 2 provided in a horizontal position instead of a vertical position in the first embodiment and the lock 21 has its front end provided with a round hole 231 for the bead 241 of the lateral rod 24 to fit therein to move therein.
The present invention can apply to lock not only the gearshift of an automobile, but also the shaft 41 of the steering wheel 4 of an automobile for stopping the shaft 41 from rotating in preventing the automobile from stolen.
As shown in FIG. 8, the present invention can also apply to a bicycle, locking the head tube 51 of the handle 5 to a bicycle.
While the preferred embodiments of the invention have been described above, it will be recognized and understood that various modifications may be made therein and the appended claims are intended to cover all such modifications which may fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.

Claims (3)

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. A versatile lock comprising a first half housing and a second half housing combined firmly together around a gearshift lever of an automobile for locking said lever immovable, said second half housing having a lock provided with a fush rod having a sloped lower end, a lateral slide rod having a sloped end to contact exactly with said sloped lower end of said push rod so that when said push rod is pushed down in locking said lock, it pushes said slide rod to move forward horizontally, a round hole provided in a front end of said slide rod for a bead fixed at one end of a lateral rod to fit and revolve therein, a lateral hole provided in a lever body of said gearshift lever at a corresponding location to a free end of said lateral rod, said lock being locked to extend said push rod down to push said slide rod, said slide rod pushing the bead together with said lateral rod, said lateral rod then pushed to insert in said lateral hole in said gearshift lever, consequently said lever body of said gearshift lever being stopped from moving to shift gears.
2. The versatile lock as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said first and said second housing and respectively have a plurality of projections on their inner semi-circular surfaces, said projections protruding in said gearshift lever to increase wrapping force of said two housings after said two housings are fixed around said gearshift lever, a hollow sleeve fixed laterally in an inner surface of said second housing and protruding in said lateral hole of said gearshift lever not only increasing tightness of said two housings against said gearshift lever but also letting said lateral rod to slide smoothly into said lateral hole of said gearshift lever.
3. The versatile lock as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said lock in said second housing is deposited in a horizontal position, and said push rod formed at the lower end of said lock and having said round hole for said bead of said lateral rod to fit therein.
