Abstract
1381866 Anti-theft devices WILMOTBREEDEN Ltd 30 March 1972 [15 April 1971] 10657/71 Heading B7J [Also in Division E2] A vehicle anti-theft device has a locking slide 4 and bolt 5 within a housing 1 and movable together between operative and inoperative positions by an operating shaft 11 and cam 12, 13 acting on the slide and adapted to be turned by a key-operated lock mechanism, the bolt being of a non-circular cross-section and projecting from the housing in the operative position. The bolt and slide each have a sliding fit in the housing and are separably joined for relative orientation, on assembly of the device, about the axis of sliding movement of the bolt to permit the said sliding fits. As shown, the slide 4 is provided with a yoke 20 engaged in a necked portion 21 of the bolt 5 and is biased by springs 9 towards the locking position wherein the bolt engages and prevents rotation of a motor vehicle steering column. The lock mechanism in the housing part 2 is coupled by the shaft 11 to switch mechanism 7 connectible in the vehicle ignition and starter circuits. A key is inserted in the lock mechanism and turned in a direction to the electrically "off" position of the switch 7 and the shaft 11 is moved axially with the plug of the mechanism to advance cam sections 12, 13 into engagement with a cam follower surface 14 on the slide 4 and to depress a spring-loaded plunger 15; rotation of the shaft causes the cam section 12 to retract the slide and bolt so that the surface 14 rides on the part-cylindrical cam surface 13 coaxial with the shaft, whereafter the device may be further operated to switching positions for ignition and starting purposes. By turning the key back to the electrically "off" position and beyond that position the cam sections 12, 13 are carried clear of the slide but the plunger 15 engages a further cylindrical surface on the shaft 11 so that the slide remains retracted; withdrawal of the key allows axial movement of the shaft with the plug of the lock mechanism so that the shaft disengages from the plunger and the latter with the slide moves to the locking position. Electrical contacts may be included and operative in a circuit providing a warning if the vehicle driver leaves the vehicle without removing the key.
