Abstract

1471405 Steering column lock LOWE & FLETCHER Ltd 3 May 1974 [10 May 1973] 22314/73 Heading E2A A locking device for locking the steering column of a motor vehicle comprises a body 10 e.g. for mounting on the steering column casing, a bolt member (35 Fig. 3 not shown) mounted in the body movable between a releasing position and a locking position in engagement with the steering column shaft or an element secured thereto to prevent its rotation, a key-operated lock mechanism 12 mounted in the body for controlling the bolt movement and including a key-receiving member 13 rotatable by a key relative to the body, the body 10 having a chamber 18 for a switch assembly 16 or a part thereof, a control member 19 mounted partly in the chamber to project therefrom outside the body, an interlock mechanism so that both the key of the device and the control member must be moved by an operator in order to bring about movement of the bolt member from the releasing to the locking position thereof. As described, the bolt member (35) is spring-urged to its locking position and is withdrawn therefrom by key-operated lock mechanism 12 by means of cam (15). The manually-operable control member 19 has a head 20 formed with an opening 24 through which extends a shaft 14 secured to the keyreceiving member 13 for rotation therewith. The shaft 14 carries an eccentric element 26 in opening 24. For unlocking, the key and shaft 14 are rotated anticlockwise as shown in Figs. 4, 5. Cam faces 27 and 28 formed on the member 19 and element 26 respectively then co-operate to displace the control member 19 to its first position, Fig. 5. Further rotation closes ignition switch contacts and then the starter motor contacts. To lock the steering column, the control member 19 is pushed upwardly to its second position, Fig. 4, so that clockwise rotation of the keyreceiving member may take place and to release the bolt member (35) for movement to its locking position. Unless control member 19 is pushed upwardly this rotation is prevented by engagement of surfaces 29, 30. The control member 19 is biassed by gravity to its first position and releasably held in its second position by a spring-loaded ball 31.
