Abstract

A circular knitting machine has a number of segments around its periphery for location of knitting or loop transfer stations and each segment receives, interchangeably, either a cambox for controlling the knitting or loop transferring movement of needles and optionally an associated yarn feed device, or a straight-through cam track for controlling the butts of needles passing through that cam track and retaining those needles at flush to jack height. The invention permits the purchaser of a circular knitting machine according to the invention to specify the number of knitting and transfer stations desired.

Description

TITLE: Multifeed Circular Knitting Machine DESCRIPTION: Field of the Invention The invention relates to multifeed circular knitting machines, and in particular to cylinder and dial machines at which different stations around the machine have control cams for moving the needles through knitting or loop transfer needle movements.
Background Art There has been a trend in recent years to attempt to maximize the production capacity of a circular knitting machine by providing the maximum possible number of knitting stations around the machine, so that each complete revolution of the cylinder causes the creation of the maximum possible number of courses of knitted fabric. Camboxes are designed to take up the minimum possible angular space, as are the associated yarn feeder devices, so that the maximum possible number of knitting or loop transfer stations can be accommodated around a knitting machine of any particular diameter. As the complexity of the camboxes and yarn feeder units increases, so the cost associated with that increase is multiplied many times over according to the multiple of the knitting and transfer stations around the knitting machine.
Not all customers require machines with the maximum possible number of yarn feed and loop transfer stations.
Indeed some customers would prefer a lower purchase price for the initial knitting machine, to offset against the lower productivity which a machine with fewer feeders would offer. Other customers would prefer the knitting machine to have fewer yarn feeders in order to avoid the noticeably spiral appearance of fabric knitted on a knitting machine with a very large number of feeders.
Up to the present, customers have had to choose between knitting machines offering fixed numbers of yarn feed and loop transfer stations, and there has been no knitting machine available which has offered flexibility in the choice.
The Invention The invention provides a circular knitting machine having a number of segments around its periphery for location of knitting or loop transfer stations; wherein each segment receives, interchangeably, either a cambox for controlling the knitting or loop transferring movement of needles of the machine and optionally an associated yarn feed device, or a straight-through cam track for controlling the butts of needles passing through that cam track and retaining those needles at flush to jack height.
The invention permits the purchaser of a circular cylinder and dial, single cylinder or double cylinder knitting machine according to the invention to specify the number of knitting and transfer stations desired. The knitting machine can then be supplied with only that number of stations, and run-through cam tracks at every other sector. If ever the knitting machine user wishes to increase the number of knitting or transfer stations around the knitting machine, it is possible to remove one or more sections of the run-through cam track at different segments of the machine, and replace that cam track by add-on camboxes and yarn feeders for the required additional knitting or loop transfer stations.
The run-through cam track preferably comprises a track for containing the needle butts and passing them without needle raising or lowering with the needles maintained at the flush to jack height, being the normal rest position of the needles, with the hooks of the needles being at the height of-the needle bed verge.
The invention is particularly useful in combination with our invention for a universal cambox for a circular knitting machine, described and claimed in a British
Patent Application# filed on the same day as the present Application. The invention is also particularly suited to electronic needle selection, in which case the programme control necessary to control only one needle station on the entire machine, up to the maximum possible number of knitting stations that can physically be located, one per segment, around the machine, can be preprogrammed into the control equipment from the outset; or alternatively upgrade programmes can be provided each
time an additional reed#station is fitted to the knittlng machine in substitution for a straight-through cam section.
The circular knitting machine may be a cylinder and dial machine, in which case each sector is provided, interchangeably, with a cambox for the cylinder needles and a cambox for the dial needles, or with a pair of straight-through cam tracks for the respective needles.

CLAIMS:
1. A circular knitting machine having a number of segments around its periphery for location of knitting or loop transfer stations; wherein each segment receives, interchangeably, either a cambox for controlling the knitting or loop transferring movement of needles of the machine and optionally an associated yarn feed device, or a straight-through cam track for controlling the butts of needles passing through that cam track and retaining those needles at flush to jack height.
2. A circular knitting machine according to claim 1 being a cylinder and dial knitting machine.
3. A circular knitting machine according to claim 1, being a single cylinder knitting machine.
4. A circular knitting machine according to claim 1, being a double cylinder knitting machine.
5. A circular knitting machine according to claim 2, wherein each segment receives, interchangeably, either a cylinder cambox and a dial cambox to control the respective cylinder and dial needles or a pair of straight-through cam tracks for the respective needles.
