Abstract
229,720. Little Co., A. E., and Reed, J. H. Sept. 4, 1923. Machines using continuous wire or strip metal. -A method of inserting metallic fasteners so that they are anchored in the work without completely penetrating it, particularly suitable for attaching uppers to insoles, consists in progressively defecting the point of the fastener as it is entering the work. In apparatus described for carrying out this method staples S of the form shown in Fig. 8 are formed from wire or strip 25 which is bent over a part cylindrical anvil 26 by formers 27, one of which constitutes a movable cutter 29 co-operating with a fixed cutter 30. The formers are carried by a plunger 28 and are moved toward one another by cam surfaces 32. The completed staple is moved by a slide into a throat 15 and is driven by a plungger comprising members 16 pivoted to a plunger 17. The throat 15 has a part 19 of a width equal to the widest part of the staple prongs, and an open end 18 narrowed to the width of the staple head. When the staple is driven its prongs are continuously deflected towards one another by the narrowed opening 18, this deflection being assisted by the lateral movement of the driver members 16, which have projections 20 which engage the ends of the staple head. Specification 194,371 is referred to.
