Abstract

230,118. Little Co., A. E., and Reed, J. H. Sept. 4, 1923. Machines using continuous wire or strip metal.-A fastenerinserting machine includes means for deforming the fastener as it is inserted in the work in such a manner that it will be anchored or clinched in the work without completely penetrating it. In the construction shown, the machine forms from metal wire or strip staples of the form shown in Fig. 9, and the driving means are such that the prongs 11 are bent inwardly, as shown in Fig. 15, as they penetrate the work, for example the upper and insole of a shoe after lasting. The metal strip S is fed to a slot 4 in an anvil 5 arranged in a chamber 15 in the stapling head 41 by dogs 27 on a slide 26 reciprocated by means of a lever 28, roll 30, and cam 31. Formers 51 attached to a crosshead 54 are then lowered by means of a lever 56, roll 57, and cam 58 to the position shown in Fig. 4, the left-hand former co-operating with a cutter 85 to sever a staple blank along a line inclined to the length of the strip. The anvil 5 is rocked in order to conform the staple shanks to the shape of the anvil by pressure against the formers 51, first in an anti-clockwise, and then in a clockwise direction by means of a pinion 60 and a rack 61 operated by a lever 64, roll 66, and cam groove 88. The anvil 5 is now withdrawn rearwardly by a cam slide 45, leaving the formed staple frictionally held in the chamber 15. The driving means comprise a driver 72 mounted on a plunger 71 connected by a link 73 to a lever 74, which carries a roll 76 in a cam-groove 87 and has a vertically-adjustable pivot 75. The driver 72 comprises two members 6 which are of resilient material so that they may be forced towards one another by pressure and which are shaped at their lower ends to fit portions of the staple shanks adjacent to the staple head. To cause the driver to strike a percussive blow-up on the staple, a lever 90 co-operates with the lever 74. The lever 90 is urged downwardly by a spring 92 when it is released by a shoulder 97 on a cam 96 with which a roll 93 on the lever 90 engages. The staple throat 17 through which the staple passes when driven has parallel walls 19 a distance apart equal to the maximum width of the staple, but the lower end is contracted by curved inward extensions 2, which force the staple prongs towards one another as the staple is driven between them. The engagement of the shaped extensions 7 of the driving members 6 with the top of the staple prongs prevents buckling of the staple head. When the machine is used for securing an upper to an insole after lasting the throat 17 may be provided with a projecting point 99, Fig. 18, adapted to engage the edge of the upper in order to draw it tight before staples are driven. The various cams are mounted on a shaft 42 wihch may be operatively connected to a driving pulley 39 by suitable clutch mechanism. Specifications 6724/96 and 194,371 are referred to.
