Abstract
The top cover sheet 2 is attached by looping around the front of the dimensionally stable roof frame 6 and is secured in place by a rail 10 which is bolted 12 to the underside of the frame. The rail has an attachment flange and an accommodation 13 for a sealing member for sealing the roof against the front frame of the car. At the rear of the roof frame 5 a holding strip 17 is secured to the underside of the roof covering via an attachment strip 19 bonded to the top cover at one end, the attachment strip having a nipple-like lug (20) when viewed in cross section on the other end which mates with a receptacle (21) in the holding strip, the holding strip being releasably clipped to the frame 5. In other embodiments (Fig. 4) the front of the top covering is secured at the back of the rail by a similar nipple-like lug (37) trapped between the rear of the rail (39) and the underside of the front of the frame (5). <IMAGE>
Description
1 Folding Top for Motor Vehicles 2295359 The invention relates to a
folding top for a motor vehicle comprising a top covering supported on a dimensionally stable top portion attachable to a motor vehicle.
A folding top with a covering and a dimensionally stable top portion situated thereunder is disclosed in the German Patent 38 14 379 Cl, in which the top covering passes around the front and rear edges of the dimensionally stable top portion and is respectively joined to the underside of the top portion by adhesion.
The solvent-containing adhesives required for this purpose are environmentally damaging, and so the use thereof is problematic. In addition, the assembly costs when producing the top covering are considerable, since the adhesive requires a certain length of time for setting. Additional drawbacks arise when a top covering is changed, since dismantling the old top covering is awkward and difficult.
An object of the invention is to provide an attachment of a top covering to the dimensionally stabl 2 top portion situated thereunder, which has a satisfactory 'operation at the same time as a simple assembly and in which it is possible to dispense with adhesive joins.
The invention provides a folding top for a motor vehicle as claimed in Claim 1.
The advantages mainly achieved by the invention are that the screw and clip connexion permits a simple, inexpensive attachment of the top covering to the dimensionally stable top portion situated thereunder, in which case adhesive joins can be dispensed with completely.
The top covering passes around the front, transversely extending edge region of the dimensionally stable top portion and is held in position on the underside of the top portion by fastening screws.
Preferably, an attachment strip is secured to the underside of the top covering adjacent the rear edge region of the top portion, and a free end of the attachment strip remote from the top covering is provided with a cross-sectional enlargement securable in a correspondingly-shaped receiving means of the holding strip.
3.
3 The assembly and dismantling of the top covering can be performed rapidly and easily even in the case of repair, as a result of dispensing with adhesive joins.
Two embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view from the rear of a collapsible top for a motor vehicle; Fig. 2 is a section along the line II-II in Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3 shows a detail X in Fig. 2 on an enlarged scale, and Fig. 4 is a section through a front end region of the dimensionally stable top portion of a further embodiment.
A folding top 1 for a motor vehicle, in particular for a passenger car, comprises a supporting top frame and a resilient top covering 2 secured thereto. The top covering 2 has a rear window 3 in a rear, transversely extending area.
4 All that is shown of the top frame is a dimensionally stable top portion 5 of large area which extends adjacent to a windscreen frame 4 and which, as shown in Fig. 2, is formed by a die-cast part consisting of an aluminium or magnesium alloy. The top covering 2 rests at least in part on the outer surface of the dimensionally stable top portion 5 and it is held in place on the front edge region 6 and on the rear edge region 7 of the top portion 5 by way of releasable fastening members.
A first end region 8 of the top covering 2 passes around the front edge region 6 of the dimensionally stable top portion 5 and rests in part against the underside of the top portion 5. A resilient moulded strip 9 of plastics material, which is suspended in a holding strip 11 by a U- shaped end portion 10, is sewn onto the end region 8. The holding strip 11 is secured to the top portion 5 by means of screws 12. A sealing member 14 is inserted between the end region 8 of the top covering 2 and a receiving portion 13 of the holding strip 11, a portion 15 of hollow section at the end of the sealing member 14 cooperating with the adjacent wind screen frame 4.
The top covering 2 can be secured in the rear edge region 7 of the dimensionally stable top portion 5 to a profiled holding strip 16 which cooperates by way of a clip fastening 17 with the dimensionally stable top portion 5 situated thereunder.
Adjacent to the rear transversely extending edge region 7 of the dimensionally stable top portion 5 an attachment strip 19 or piping is secured to the top covering 2 on the side facing the passenger compartment 18, the attachment strip 19 or piping being provided at its free end remote from the top covering 2 with a cross-sectional enlargement 20 which can be secured in a corresponding undercut receiving means 21 of the holding strip 16. The attachment strip 19 or piping is secured to the top covering 2 by sewing, adhesion (for example hot melt adhesion) or the like.
The holding strip 16 is produced from plastics material or light metal.
The receiving means 21 is formed by a longitudinal groove which is provided with a narrow insertion opening 22 and extends in the transverse direction of the vehicle and in which the attachment strip 19 of the top covering 2 can be secured. The insertion opening 22 faces the top covering 2. The longitudinal groove is made circular in cross-section. The holding strip 16 rests on at least one vertical, upwardly projecting rib 6 23 of the dimensionally stable top portion 5.
A downwardly projecting mounting rib 24 is formed on the holding strip 16 and is positioned in front of the transversely extending receiving means 21.
The holding strip 16 is provided at the rear end 28 thereof - as viewed in the direction of travel - with an arcuate portion 25 which is directed downwards and which engages behind a nose-shaped projection 26 on a vertical web 27 of the dimensionally stable top portion 5.
In the embodiment, the dimensionally stable top portion 5 is provided with a cut-out portion 28 - which is made substantially rectangular as seen in plan view between its front and rear end regions 6, 7 on grounds of weight.
It is also possible, however, for the dimensionally stable top portion 5 to have no such cut-out portion.
Longitudinally extending reinforcement ribs 30, 31 are formed locally on both sides of the rib 23 on the recess-shaped area 29 of the top portion 5. The foremost rib 30 has a run-up slope 32 for the mounting of the holding strip 16. The rear rib 31, on the other hand, has a relatively low height because of the 7 receiving means 21.
Because the top covering 2 is fastened to the front and rear edge of the top portion 5 it remains tensioned even when the folding top 1 is taken down, and the top portion 5 can also be used as a sort of box cover for the top.
Fig. 4 shows a further embodiment for fastening the top covering 2 to the front edge region of the top portion 5.
In this embodiment the first end region 8 of the top covering 2 passes around the front edge region 6 of the dimensionally stable top portion 5 and is fixed to the underside of the top portion 5. This is made possible by a cardboard strip 33 which is sewn onto the top covering 2 and which is provided with a double-sided adhesive tape 35 on the side facing an impression 34 in the top portion 5. A portion 36 of the top covering 2 extending successively on the cardboard strip 33 is provided at its free end with a lug-like edge region 37 with an insert part 38. The portion 36 is held in position on the top portion 5 by means of a holding rail 39 and fastening screws 40. The holding rail 39 has a receiving portion 41 for the sealing member 14. An upwardly directed projection 42 at the end of the 8 holding rail 39 cooperates with the lug-like edge region 37 of the top covering 2 and clamps it against the underside of the top portion 5.
