Abstract

A hinge mechanism comprises a shaft 3 cooperating with a one-way clutch disposed for resisted rotation in a hinge body 1. In the preferred embodiment the hinge body includes a part formed as a split clamp frictionally embracing an outer ring 2 of a needle roller one-way clutch, and the resistance to rotation of outer ring 2 in the split clamp can be adjusted by means of a clamping bolt 6 and nut 4 in conjunction with a spring 5. The hinge may be used in the lid of a tissue processor apparatus to enable the lid to be freely opened to an arbitrary position in which it will remain until positively closed, or as a door hinge to permit free movement in one direction while constraining movement in the opposite direction under the influence of a spring. <IMAGE>

Description

Title of Invention "Hinge" THIS INVENTION relates to hinges, especially but not exclusively for lids, machine covers and the like (all hereinafter called "lids" for simplicity) where there is a requirement to raise such a lid to a lifted or open position with provision for it to be retained in that position until lowering or closure is desired.
Spring-biased hinges are known but are unsatisfactory for many applications in that the biasing needs to be carefully adapted to the load to be supported by the hinge in the lifted or open position of the lid and additionally such hinges do not reliably hold the lid in a position outside a rather small range of positions nor do they allow the full weight of the lid to secure it in place in its lowered or closed condition. Accordingly, where the weight of the lid is required to produce a sealing force in the lowered or closed position, and reliability of support of the lid in a raised position is essential, it is customary to provide non-biased hinges in combination with a stay mechanism for supporting the lid in its raised position.A variety of stay mechanisms are known for this purpose but mostly these provide a latching function that will support the lid in only one raised position and require the lid to be raised beyond that position to release the latch and thereby permit lowering of the lid.
A further disadvantage of such arrangements is their complexity and the vulnerability of the stay mechanisms.
Accordingly, a need exists for a simple and reliable hinge mechanism that can reliably support a raised lid in an arbitrary position from which the lid may be directly lowered without recourse to an unlatching or like motion.
An objective of the present invention is to satisfy this need.
In accordance with the invention, a hinge mechanism comprises a shaft cooperating with a one-way clutch disposed for resisted rotation in a hinge body.
The arrangement of this mechanism is such that the shaft may rotate freely in one direction relatively to the hinge body as a consequence of the one-way clutch that operates to restrain rotation of the shaft in the opposite direction, such rotation being however permitted by resisted rotation of the shaft and the one-way clutch as a unit relatively to the hinge body. Thus, in applying such a hinge mechanism to a lid, the hinge body and the shaft would be respectively connected to the relatively moveable components so as to enable free raising of the lid by rotation of the shaft as permitted by the one-way clutch, the resistance to rotation of the clutch in the opposite direction relatively to the hinge body being such as to support the lid in any arbitrary raised position while enabling the lid to be lowered directly by applying force sufficient to overcome the said resistance to rotation.
Desirably, means are provided for adjustment of the resistance to rotation between the one-way clutch and the hinge body. In a convenient arrangement, the hinge body comprises a split clamp for the one-way clutch with a spring-loaded clamp bolt or equivalent to adjust the grip of the clamp upon the one-way clutch.
The one-way clutch may be of any appropriate form having regard to the duty envisaged for the hinge mechanism. A needle roller one-way clutch mechanism is preferred.
The hinge body and the shaft may be formed appropriately for connection to the respective components with which the hinge mechanism is to be used.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing that is an exploded isometric view of the essential components of a hinge mechanism intended for hingedly connecting the lid of a tissue processor apparatus to the body structure of the latter so as to enable the lid to be freely opened to an arbitrary position in which it will remain safely supported against closing movement whilst the operator loads or unloads the processor in the operation thereof.
The illustrated hinge mechanism comprises a hinge body 1 in the form of a split clamp with integral mounting block for attachment to an apparatus body structure. The split clamp is dimensioned to accommodate a needle roller one-way clutch that cooperates with a shaft 3 that extends through the clutch 2, and thus through the split clamp of the hinge body 1, and has flats on its ends for nonrotational securement to mounting blocks (not shown) of an appropriate form for attachment to the lid of the apparatus.
The mounting block of the hinge body 1 comprises a housing for a spring 5 that encircles the shank of a clamp bolt 6 and acts between the body 1 and a nut 4 adjustable on the clamp bolt 6 so as to adjust the thrust of the spring 5 on the split clamp and so determine the frictional grip of the latter on the one-way clutch 2.
The illustrated hinge mechanism may be used alone or as one of a pair or set of hinges for a lid. The other hinge or hinges may be of the same construction or may be conventional, depending upon the duty requirements.
Although the hinge mechanism of the invention is particularly appropriate for lids and machine covers as described, it will be understood that other applications are possible. For instance it may be employed as a door hinge arranged to permit free movement of the door in one direction (opening or closing) while constraining movement in the opposite direction under the influence, for instance, of a spring.
