Abstract

A telescopic spring counterbalance comprises a spring assembly 1 having tubular casing 2 provided with a pivoted end fixing 3 and an end cap 4. A guide rod 6 extends through the end cap 4 and has an end plate 7 retained by a locknut 8 at one end inside the casing 2 and a second clevis end fixing 9. A plurality of disc springs 10 are fitted in the casing 2 between the end plate 7 and the end cap 4. The spring assembly 1 is affixed to a hatch door 11 and to the hatch surround. The hatch door 11 is hinged around a hinge point 14. The spring assembly 1 is tensioned so as to create an opening moment for the hatch door 11 which effectively offsets a portion of the weight of the hatch door 11 and this makes it considerably easier to open. <IMAGE>

Description

Telescopic Spring This invention relates to a telescopic spring especially but not exclusively for use as a counterbalance on hatches and the like.
Hatch covers on ships are often of very heavy construction and this necessitates the provision of a counterbalance arrangement. Such arrangements may involve the provision of a counterbalance weight or a torsion spring arrangement.
Such arrangements can be complicated and unreliable.
According to the present invention there is provided a telescopic spring counterbalance for hatches and the like comprising a spring assembly having a tubular casing, a guide rod having a first end portion slidably mounted in the casing and a second end portion extending from the casing, and a plurality of disc springs arranged in the casing to bias the first end of the guide rod away from the end of the casing through which the guide rod extends, the spring assembly being affixed to a hatch at one end and at the other end to a hatch surround the arrangement being such that the spring assembly provides an opening moment about the axis of a hinge of the hatch.
Preferably, the spring assembly is pivotally attached at one end to a bracket on the hatch and at the other end to a bracket extending from the hatch surround.
Preferably also, the bracket on the hatch surround is arranged such that the tension in the disc springs decreases as the hatch is opened.
Preferably also, adjustment means are provided for altering the tension in the disc springs.
Most preferably, said adjustment means comprises a threaded cap on the end of the tubular casing.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a sectional side view of a telescopic spring counterbalance in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the drawing a telescopic spring counterbalance comprises a spring assembly shown generally at 1. The spring assembly 1 comprises a tubular casing 2 provided with a first clevis end fixing 3 at one end and a threaded end cap 4 provided with a locking nut 5 at the other end. A guide rod 6 extends through the end cap 4 and has an end plate 7 retained by a locknut 8 at one end inside the casing 2 and a second clevis end fixing 9 at the other end. A plurality of disc springs 10 are fitted in the casing 2 between the end plate 7 and the end cap 4.
The spring assembly 1 is affixed to a hatch door 11 by the first clevis end fixing 3 which is attached to a bracket 12 on the hatch 11 and to the hatch surround by the second clevis fixing 9 which is attached to a bracket 13 on the hatch surround.
The hatch door 11 is hinged around a hinge point 14. The spring assembly 1 is tensioned such that the clevis fixings 3 and 9 are biased towards one another. As a result of the offset, shown at 15, between the hinge 14 and the clevis fixing 9, this creates an opening moment for the hatch door 11 which effectively offsets a portion of the weight of the hatch door 11 and this makes it considerably easier to open. As the hatch door 11 swings open the force exerted by the spring assembly 1 decreases as the distance between the brackets 12 and 13 becomes smaller. The threaded end cap 4 and associated locknut 5 allow the initial tension in the disc springs 10 to be altered to achieve the desired characteristics for the assembly.
The telescopic spring counterbalance has particular application for ships hatches but other alternative uses are also envisaged. Modifications and improvements may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
