Abstract
229,415. Clarke, W. O. Jan. 7, 1924. Teaching optics. - In apparatus for demonstrating experiments in light, comprising a box or enclosure having at least one transparent wall and adapted to contain a smoke or like cloud, the box contains optical apparatus and is provided with means for producing and agitating the cloud to render it uniform and stable so that the path of a beam of light through the optical apparatus is rendered visible. A movable shutter E<1> formed with a number of holes or slits is placed over a window E in the box so that beams of light entering the box from a source S may be varied as desired; a lens E<2> or other means for controlling the beams may also be provided. A rubber bulb K or the like is connected tc the box for the purpose of creating a blast to agitate the smoke, which may be produced by any suitable means inside or outside the box. Lenses, mirrors, prisms, or other optical apparatus are carried on stands D inside the box, and adapted to be moved into or cut of the path of the beams, and, if desired, to be rotated by means of rods B which may extend to the outside of the box. A series of graduated scales F, G<2>, H, H<2> may also be provided. The lid or other part of the box is hinged or detachable to facilitate insertion or removal of the apparatus.
