Abstract

A horizontal axis wind motor is mounted on a floating structure for generating electricity or for directly coupled propulsion. The axis may be fixed or be mounted to allow up to 20 degrees or freedom either side thereof to help the wind motor blades face the wind direction. As shown the wind motor is rear mounted behind the sail on a yacht. Alternatively the wind motor may be mounted on sailless structures such as pontoons, floats, buoys or floating rigs. <IMAGE>

Description

The generator could be mounted in such a way as allows a certain amount of turning motion, to help the blades face the wind direction (Fig.2).
(i) Uphaul rotating link (ii) Swivelling support platform (iii) Downhaul link connected to platform or supports (x) Turning range dictated by stops on the platform The general idea of the rear mounted generator is that wind is directed into the generator blades by the standard sail rig (Fig.3). The electricity generated can be used directly, or stored in batteries on board.
The rear mounted generator can also be used on a specific to type rig as shown in Figure 4.
For a specific to type mast rig, the following types are included in this specification (see Fig.5): (i) YI rig (ii) Y rig (iii) V rig (iv) A rig (v) H' rig (vi) 'HW' rig (vii) 'T rig (viii) 'TH rig

Claims (4)

  1. CLAIMS 1. Employment of a standard wind generator, fitted to a bipod mounting unit**, thereby fixing the wind turbine in a horizontal axis position, at the rear (aft) of a yacht, in such a way that the turbine shaft does not turn in the horizontal plane in order to face the wind.
  2. 2. A variation of the design, using swivel couplings to allow the wind turbine up to 20 degrees of freedom in the horizontal plane (either side of the shaft axis), to make use of deflected wind more efficiently.
  3. 3. A wind generator system, generating electricity or directly coupled propulsion, which can be mounted onto a conventional yacht, in a horizontal axis fashion, allowing normal use of the yacht's sail rig.
  4. 4. A wind generator system for mounting onto pontoons, floats, boys and floating rigs for electricity generating.
