Abstract

A box 1 comprises 8 base 2 and a lid 3. Both the base 2 and the lid 3 have peripheral sidewalls adapted to overlie each other. One wall of the lid 3 extends into a tongue 8 which engages with a slot 5 defined in the base to form a hinge connection. The lid 3 is thus hingedly connected to the base without use of further materials or adhesive. <IMAGE>

Description

BOX This invention relates to boxes, in particular, but not exclusively, to boxes having a cardboard base and a transparent lid, intended to contain products such as ornate greetings cards.
Known boxes of this type have the lid entirely detachable from the base. It is the aim of this invention to provide a box in which the lid is hingedly attached to the base without the use of further materials or adhesives.
According to the present invention there is provided a box comprising a base having upstanding base side walls and a lid having peripheral side walls adapted to overlie the base side walls when in a closed position, the lid including a tongue engageable in a slot defined in the base to thereby form a hinge connection between the lid and base about which th2 lid is pivotable between an open position and a closed position.
Preferably, the base is formed of cardboard or like material and the lid is formed of a transparent material.
To assist a clear understanding of the invention a more detailed description is given below with reference to the following drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a box in accordance with the invention in an open position; and Figure 2 shows a side sectional view along line II-II.
The box 1 comprises a base 2 and lid 3 and is intended to contain a greetings card. In the embodiment shown the base 2 has a rectangular base panel 2a and three upstanding side walls 4. The base is made of cardboard or like thin, semi-rigid material. An elongate slot 5 is defined in the base panel 2a towards and parallel with the end of the base that has no side wall. The lid 3 has a rectangular main panel 3a and three peripheral side walls 6 extending perpendicular to the plane of the main panel 3a, which side walls are designed to fit over the walls 4 when the box is closed. The lid is formed of a transparent material such as flap 7. The flap 7 has a first part 7a adjacent the main panel 3a, which forms a side wall for the lid, and a tongue which extends from the said first part 7a and has at its free end laterally extending barbs 9. This tongue 8 is adapted to be slotted through the slot 5 from underneath the base 2 when the box is assembled. The transverse width of the tongue 8 is substantially the same dimension as the length of the slot 5. The barbs deform while the tongue is being pushed through the slot, extending beyond the slot when inserted to retain the tongue in position. The hinge connection formed by the tongue 8 and slot 5 allow the lid to pivot around this point between an open and a closed position.
It will be understood by those skilled in the art that the invention is not limited to the embodiment described above. For example, the box need not be rectangular but can be hexagonal or any other suitable shape.

Claims (9)

Claims:
1. A box comprising a base having upstanding base side walls and a lid having peripheral side walls adapted to overlie the base side walls when in a closed position, the lid including a tongue engageable in a slot defined in the base to thereby form a hinge connection between the lid and base about which the lid is pivotable between an open position and a closed position.
2. A box as claimed in claim 1 wherein barbs are formed on the free end of the tongue to enable the tongue to engage in the slot.
3. A box as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein the number of base side walls is one less than the number of sides of the base.
4. A box as claimed in claim 3 wherein the slot is located in the base towards and parallel with the side of the base having no side wall.
5. A box as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the base is made of a semi-rigid material.
6. A box as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the lid is formed of a transparent material.
7. A box as claimed in claim 6 wherein the transparent material is PVC.
8. A box as claimed in claim 6 wherein the transparent material is acetate.
9. A box substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
