Description

LIGHTING APPARATUS This invention relates to lighting apparatus.
According to the present invention there is provided lighting apparatus comprising a housing and a light source disposed within the housing, a first side of the housing being permeable to light of a first pre-selected frequency range, and a second side of the housing being permeable to light of a second pre-determined frequency range, wherein the second frequency range is different from the first frequency range, and the first side of the housing is opposite to the second side of the housing.
Preferably the housing is elongate and the two sides of the housing extend along the longitudinal axis thereof. The housing may be formed by extrusion.
Desirably the lighting apparatus further comprises a backing, and the housing is mounted to the backing in such a way that the first side of the housing faces the backing, and the second side of the housing faces away from the backing.
When the lighting apparatus is mounted on the backing, the light passing through the first side of the housing illuminates the backing in a certain colour, while the light passing through the second side of the housing illuminates the visible part of the housing in a different colour. This provides a lighting effect which resembles a strip one colour on another.
The backing is preferably elongate, and the housing is preferably mounted to the backing such that the longitudinal axis of the housing is substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the backing.
In the preferred construction the backing comprises a strip having two edges, and the housing is mounted closer to one edge than the other. It is desirable that the cross-section of the strip is arcuate.
In a preferred embodiment the lighting apparatus further comprises a reflector disposed within the housing, said reflector being adapted to reflect light from the light source through the first side of the housing. Preferably, the reflector is adapted to reflect light from the light source towards the edge of the backing remote from the housing.
The first side of the housing may comprise a filter having a colour corresponding to the colour of light in said first frequency range. However, it is preferred that the first frequency range corresponds the the entire frequency range of visible light, in which case the first side of the housing will be substantially transparent.
The second side of the housing preferably comprises a filter having a colour corresponding to the colour of light in said second frequency range. In the most preferred embodiment the filter is permeable only to blue light (ie to light in the frequency range of substantially 610.4 to 711.5 THz).
The light source preferably comprises at least one cold cathode tube. Support means may be provided to support the light source within the housing. The support means preferably comprises an opaque strip.
The lighting apparatus can be used to provide lighting in a wide variety of applications. A particular application is to a fuel service station, where the backing may be already present as part of the service station.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of lighting apparatus according to the invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of lighting apparatus according to the invention; and Figure 3 is an enlarged view of the lower right hand part of figure 1.
Referring to the drawings a lighting apparatus generally designated 10 comprises an extruded elongate housing 12, a backing 14 (not shown in figure 2 and 3) and a light source 16.
The housing comprises a first side 12a, which faces the backing 14, and a second side 12b, which faces away from the backing 14. The first side 12a is tranparent, while the second side 12b is a filter which permits only blue light to pass therethrough. The housing 12 is made from a plastic acrylic material such as that supplied by ICI under the designation 7021.
The backing 14 comprises an elongate strip and has edges 14a and 14b. The housing 12 is mounted on the backing 14, closer to the lower edge 14a than the upper edge 14b; the mounting can be effected by any known means such as a bracket arrangement (not shown). The backing 14 has an arcuate cross-section: the curve is most pronounced in the region of the upper edge 14b; this feature is provided to improve the illumination of the backing 14, by the light source 16, in the region of the upper edge 14b.
The side of the backing 14 that faces the housing 12 is white.
The light source 16 comprises two triphosphor cold cathode tubes which are disposed in the housing 12. The tubes are arranged such that they can illuminate both the first side 12a and the second side 12b of the housing 12.
The light source 16 is supported by an opaque strip 18, which is fixedly secured to the housing 12; the strip 18 has slot-shaped apertures, which receive the tubes of the light source 16. The strip 18 ensures that there is no direct path of light in the housing between the sides 12a and 12b of the housing, ie so that a person looking into the first side 12a of the housing 12 would not be able to see the second side 12b.
The lighting apparatus 10 also includes a reflector 20, which is disposed in the housing 12, underneath the upper tube of the light source 16, to reflect light from the light source 16 through the first face 12a of the housing 12. The reflector 20 may be configured such that it serves the function of providing the opaque material referred to above.
The primary purpose of the reflector 20 is to reflect a portion of the light upwardly through the first face 12a, towards the upper edge 14b of the backing 14. The reflector 20 may be adjustable, so that the optimum lighting arrangement can be achieved, regardless of the position selected for the housing 12 on the backing 14.
In use, the lighting apparatus 10 causes the backing to be lit up brightly with white light, while also providing the effect of a blue strip of light extending along the backing.
The length of the housing can be about 2m. Several lengths may be placed end to end - see figure 2 where another length 12' is shown. The light output of the lighting apparatus can be of the order of 1100 lumens/m2, with a power consumption of about 100W. The life of the cold cathode tubes is about 60000 hours, which is at least as long as the expected life of the lighting apparatus.
The invention may be modified within the scope of the following claims.
