Balancing moving parts.-A pressure chamber d is arranged behind the impeller b of a centrifugal pump to balance the axial thrust and has a variable gap f leading from it to the suction chamber. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the gap f is formed between the impeller disc and an elastic wall g, while in the alternative form shown in Fig. 2 the second face of the gap is formed by a member pressed inwards by the spiral spring h. In further modifications other forces may act on the flexible wall such as a gravity load or an air cushion.
