Abstract

A sun-roof 14 for a vehicle comprises a panel 12 with a lip 2 adjacent to its forward edge. The sun-roof panel 12 is tilted forwards and moved rearwardly for opening. In wet conditions, the lip directs rainwater sideways so as to prevent the water running over the forward edge of the panel and falling into the vehicle. The water is directed into peripheral gutters (24, Fig 14) and then into drainage tubes (28, Fig 14). The strip 2 is preferably made of a moulded plastics material. <IMAGE>

Description

A SUN-ROOF The present invention relates to sun-roofs, in particular sunroofs for motor vehicles.
From a closed position in which a panel of a sun-roof fits and seals a corresponding aperture in a vehicle, a "spoiler" type sun-roof is opened by raising the rear part of the panel causing the panel to tilt forwards. While the panel is tilted, it may then be slid rearwardly to reveal an aperture. Such sun-roofs suffer the disadvantage that in wet conditions, rain water runs off the tilted sun-roof into the vehicle. This is not only unpleasant to the driver and passengers, but is also dangerous because the driver's attention may be distracted.
An example of a spoiler-type sun-roof known is described below, demonstrating its disadvantages, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig 1 is a schematic side view of a known form of a spoiler-type sun-roof shown in the closed position; Fig 2 is a similar view of the sun-roof but shown in a tilted position; Fig 3 is a further view of the sun-roof in a tilted position and having been slid rearwardly to reveal an aperture and Fig 4 is a view of the sunroof of Fig 3 looking in the direction of arrow A in Fig 3.
A sun-roof panel 12 has a front edge 10, a rear edge 16, and sides 18. The front edge 10 is located towards the front of the vehicle to which the sun-roof is fitted.
The sun-roof panel 12 is shaped to fit in an aperture 20 in the vehicle roof indicated at 21. A peripheral gutter 22 is fitted to the roof 21 around the aperture 20, and includes side portions 24 along sides 26 of the aperture 20. The side portions 24 have openings (not shown) to drainage pipes 28. The drainage pipes direct water downwards through the vehicle bodywork towards the ground.
To open the sun-roof 14, the rear edge 16 is raised so that the sun roof panel 12 is tilted towards the front of the vehicle.
In wet conditions, rainwater flows downwards and over the front edge 10 of the sun roof panel 12 into the gutter 22. However, if the sun-roof is slid rearwardly to reveal part of the aperture 20, then rainwater can flow over the front edge 10, through the aperture 20, and into the vehicle.
The present invention provides a sun-roof comprising a sun roof panel which is tilted for opening and has a lip along an edge of the panel towards which water flows when the panel is tilted so that the water is diverted to flow along said lip rather than over the edge.
Preferably, the lip projects up from the sun roof panel surface, and may be made of a moulded plastics material.
The lip may be bowed longitudinally so as to have a curved shape which matches the shape of the sun roof panel to which it is fixed.
The lip preferably includes a fixture portion which may have moulded plastic inserts for location in corresponding sockets in the sun roof panel.
The sun-roof according to the invention, is preferably for fitting in a corresponding aperture in the vehicle roof. The aperture may include a peripheral gutter to receive water directed by the lip. The gutter may include openings to tubes which drain the water through the vehicle body towards the ground.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig 5 is a plan view of a lip for a sun-roof according to the present invention; Fig 6 is a side view of the lip; Figs 7, 8 and 9 are cross sections through the lip in Figure 5 on the lines VII-VII,VIII-VIII and IX-IX respectively in Figure 5 drawn to a larger scale; Fig 10 is a plan view of the sun-roof mounted on a vehicle.
Fig 11 is a schematic side view of the sun-roof arrangement of Fig 10; Fig 12 is a similar view of the sun-roof but shown in a tilted position; Fig 13 is a further similar view of the sun-roof in a tilted position and having been slid rearwardly to reveal an aperture; and Fig 14 is a view of the sun-roof of Fig 13 in the direction of arrow B in Fig 13.
As shown in Figs 5 to 10, the lip 2, which is of moulded plastics material, has a main portion 4 and a fixture portion 6.
The main portion 4 is bowed to follow the contour of a sun-roof top panel 12 on to which the lip 2 is fitted. The fixture portion 6 includes two fixture elements 8, such as moulded plastics inserts for fitting into corresponding sockets in a panel 12 of a sun-roof 14. The lip 2 is fitted to the front edge 10 of the sun roof panel 12, as shown in Figure 10. The sun roof panel 12 also has a rear edge 16 and sides 18. The front edge 10 is located towards the front of the vehicle to which the sun-roof is to be fitted.
The sun roof panel 12 is shaped to fit in an aperture 20 in the vehicle roof indicated at 21. A peripheral gutter 22 is fitted to the roof 21 around the aperture 20, and includes side portions 24 along sides 26 of the aperture 20. The side portions 24 have openings (not shown) to drainage pipes 28.
The drainage pipes 28 direct water downwards through the vehicle body-work towards the ground.
To open the sun-roof 14, the rear edge 16 is raised so that the sun roof panel 12 is tilted towards the front of the vehicle.
In wet conditions, rainwater flows towards the front edge 10 of the sun roof panel 12, but instead of flowing over the front edge 10, is directed sideways by the lip 2 and into the side portions 24 of the gutter 22. The water then drains from the gutter 22 through the drainage pipes 28. Even when the sun-roof panel 12 is shifted rearwardly, water flowing towards the front edge 10 is diverted by the lip 2 so as to flow sideways into the side portions 24. In that way the risk of water flowing through the aperture 20 and into the vehicle is substantially reduced.
It can be seen that the present invention recognises a real and practical problem, namely how to avoid water entering a vehicle when its sun-roof is tilted and moved rearwardly. The present invention provides a solution to this problem which is both simple and effective.
