Abstract
A window breaking device is fitted to a double glazed window frame and provides a means to breake the toughened glass panels to allow a means of escape in the case of emergencies. The unit is fixed to the window frame corner and is ready for operation at any time. To operate the unit the security/release pin 2 is released and the multi-pointed pin 4 automatically impacts on the first pane of glass. The operating handle 3 is then pushed to clear the broken glass and upon reaching the outer pane the handle is rotated to release the second pin 6 to impact on the glass. The glass can then be cleared to make a good escape point. <IMAGE>
Description
WINDOW BREAKING DEVICE
This invention relates to a window breaking device.
It is well known that to break a panel of toughened glass, such as that used in double glazed panels, to form a means of escape is very difficult if not impossible. This device, which is fixed to the frame of the window enables the operator to a) fire a multy pointed steel rod into the first pane of glass, causing it to break. b) push the rod through the broken glass onto the second panel, c) fire a single pointed steel rod into the second pane of glass causing it to break. The operating mechanism is constructed to avoid accidental use.
This device is fixed to the comer of a window frame and remains ready for operation at any time and can be used by anyone regardless of age or sex. The current method of escape is to place becide each window a hammer like tool to hit the glass with.
According to the present invention there is provided a window breaking device comprising a body that enables the device to be mounted in the corner of a window frame and contains the following items, a hardened multy pointed square steel pin and operating spring all held in tension by a release and security pin.Another hardened square steel pointed pin and operating spring are contained within the first square pin. This second pin ,which is released by turning the operating handle ,can only be operated after the multy pointed pin has been fired.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 - Shows an external view of the unit.
Figure 2 - Shows a sectional assembly of the unit mounted on a double glazed panel.
Figure 3 - Shows a sectional assembly of the unit after operation.
Refering to the drawings the device comprises, a window mounted body 1 containing items 4 to 7, a quick release 1 security pin 2 and operating handle 3.
To operate the device it is firstly assumed that the unit is mounted securley on the window frame , then the release/ security pin 2 is pulled away. This releases the square multy pointed pin 4 and tensioned operating spring 5 to impact on the glass panel. With the first panel broken the operating handle 3 is pushed to force the broken glass away and touch the second panel. The operating handle 3 is then turned to release the single pointed pin 6 and tensioned spring washers 7 to impact on the second glass panel.
Claims (3)
1 A window breaking device comprising a body that enables the device to be mounted in the corner of a window frame and contains the following a hardened steel multy pointed square pin and operating spring all held in place with a release/security pin. Another hardened steel single pointed square pin and operating spring are contained within the first square pin. This second pin, which is released by turning the operating handle, can only be operated after the multy pointed pin has been fired
2 A window breaking device as claim 1 but with items 6 and 7 removed for single panel windows.
3 A window breaking device as claim 1 or claim 2 but adapted to be glass mounted.
