Abstract
228,615. Smith, G. Nov. 6, 1923. Soles; heels. - A boot sole comprises a layer or inner sole a, preferably of rubber, which is sewn directly to the welt and is provided with resilient projections f on its under surface, and an outer sole c with a projecting rim h on its upper surface to form a box-like cavity g enclosing the projections f, the rim being secured to the margin of the inner sole by adhesive and arranged flush with the edge of the welt. The projections f may be arranged throughout the sole and heel, or at the sole or heel only, and may take the form of a series of blocks or studs, or may be made of sponge rubber. When the projections are at the heel only, a cavity is left at the forward end of the sole to give a pneumatic effect to the tread. The shoe may be heel-less, but where a heel is employed the resilient projection at the heel may be formed with a cavity on its upper side to receive a core of light rigid material, such as wood, vulcanized fibre &c.
