Description

1 2282357 AN INTERNAL REAR VIEW MIRROR FOR A MOTOR VEHICLE, PROVIDED WITH
A LICENCE HOLDER ELEMENT The present invention relates to an internal rear view mirror for a vehicle, and in particular to a mirror provided with a licence holder element for fixing the documents (licence, insurance, etc.) required by the current regulations, against the vehicle windscreen in a visible position.
Mirrors of the above-mentioned type are known; these essentially comprise a main body provided with a reflecting sheet and a support element for the main body fixed by a ball joint to this latter and fixable to the is windscreen of the vehicle. The licence-holder element generally comprises a strip of plastics material moulded at one end of a flexible metal strip which is f ixed to the support by means of a rivet.
Known mirrors of the type described have a certain structural complexity which results in rather high manufacturing and assembly costs. Moreover, the use of a metal strip increases the weight and size due to the length of strip necessary for good flexibility.
2 The object of the present invention is to produce an internal rear view mirror for a vehicle, having a licence-holder element, which will be free from the disadvantages associated with known mirrors, described above.
The said object is achieved by the present invention in that it relates to an internal rear view mirror for a vehicle, of the type comprising a main body provided with a reflecting sheet, a support element for the said main body, fixed to this latter and f ixable to a windscreen of the said vehicle, a licence- holder element, and flexible strip means connecting the said licence- holder element to the said support element, characterised in that the said support element, the said licence-holder element and the said strip means are integrally formed by moulding in plastics materials.
For a better understanding of the present invention a preferred embodiment is hereinafter described purely by way of non- limitative example and with reference to the attached drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a partially sectioned side view on a median plane of a rear view mirror formed according to the principles of the present invention; Figure 2 is a plan view f rom above of a detail of the mirror of Figure 1 and; bl 3 Figure 3 is a section taken on the line III - III of Figure 2.
With reference to figure 1, an internal rear view mirror for a vehicle, a windscreen 2 of which is partially illustrated in section, is generally indicated with the reference numeral 1.
The mirror 1 essentially comprises a main body 3 provided with a ref lecting sheet 4 and a support element 5 for the body 3 fixable to the windscreen 2. More particularly, the support element 5 has an upper base portion 6 in which is formed a seat 7 having embedded connection means of known type 4 and a small plate 9 glued to the is windscreen 2. The support element 5 has a downwardly tapered shape and includes a lower end portion 10 bent substantially at 900 rearwardly (with reference to the direction of forward movement of the vehicle indicated by the arrow F) to which the main body 3 of the mirror 1 is fixed by means of a ball joint 11.
The mirror 1 further includes a licence-holder 12 integrally connected to the support element 5 by a pair of coplanar parallel resilient strips 13 projecting from a forward side of the upper base portion 6 and operable in use to exert a resilient force urging the element 12 against the windscreen 2. Element 12 is constituted by a plate 14 f acing the windscreen 2 and provided with a 4 transverse rib 15 which can co-operate with a small plate 16 housing the licence or other documents 17 in a known way, as illustrated in detail in the enlargement of figure 1, by the resilient force exerted by the strips 13.
According to the present invention the licence carrier 12, the support element 5 and the resilient connection strips 13 are made integrally by moulding in plastics material.
The licence carrier 12 is further provided wit h a pair of lateral gripping tabs 18 having an L-shape section each extending in the opposite direction from the windscreen 2 and away f rom the element 12 (f ig 3), which have the purpose of allowing manual separation of the element 12 f rom the windscreen, as indicated by the arrow G in f igure 1, thus enabling the removal of the small plate 16 and replacement of the licence documents 17.
From a study of the characteristics of the mirror 1 formed according to the principles of the present invention the advantages which it allows are evident. First of all, the manufacture in a single piece of the support element 5 and the 1 icence -holder element 12 is particularly simple and economical and eliminates assembly costs associated with the use of a metal strip. Moreover, the elimination of the metal strip leads to a ireduction in weight and size since the strips 13 of plastics material can be shorter while possessing the same flexibility.
Finally, it is clear that the mirror 1 described above can have modifications and variations introduced thereto which do not depart from the ambit of protection of the present utility model. In particular, the small plate 16 for housing the documents 17 can also be integral with the licence holder 12 and therefore the support element 5.
