Abstract

A display panel, for example an "L" plate 11, is arranged for releasable connection to a wire basket, for example by means of clips 15 which can be snapped over wires of the basket. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Display devices The invention relates to display devices, and particularly to display devices for use on vehicles.
Difficulties have been encountered in finding a suitable place to mount a display device, for example an "L" plate, on the front of certain types of vehicle, for example motorbikes and other twowheeled vehicles. The difficulty is particularly acute on certain types of two-wheeled vehicle which are fitted with a wire carrying basket immediately in front of the handlebars of the vehicle. Such a basket actually prevents an "L" plate from being placed in certain positions, or else obscures the "L" plate so that it cannot properly be seen.
The invention provides a display device for mounting on a wire carrier basket, the display device comprising a display panel, the panel being arranged for releasable connection to the basket.
This not only solves the basic problem of where to mount an "L" plate, since the "L" plate may comprise or be attached to the display panel, but since the "L" plate can thus be positioned at the front of the basket itself, it cannot be obscured by any items stored in the basket. Furthermore, as we have now appreciated, it is easier to provide a releasable fastening between the display device and the basket, rather than between the display device and other parts of a vehicle body, and so our invention solves a further problem of providing a readily detachable "L" plate which is very important when a particular vehicle is used by several different people, some of whom may require "L" plates and some of whom may not.
Preferably the display panel is arranged to clip on to the wire basket.
The display panel may for example be provided with one or more clips which clip over part of the basket.
The display panel may be a snap-fit on the basket.
Part of the panel, or one or more clips thereon, may be arranged to snap around one of the wires making up the basket.
The or each clip may be formed integrally with the panel, or may be connected to the panel, for example by means of adhesive.
It is preferred that an "L" device is provided on the panel itself. The "L" may be provided by printing, painting, or some similar manner.
Alternatively or in addition the display panel may be embossed or otherwise shaped so that the letter "L" appears in relief.
The invention includes a wire basket when fitted with a display device according to the invention.
The invention includes a vehicle, for example a two-wheeled motor vehicle, when fitted with a wire basket and a display device according to the invention.
By way of example, a specific embodiment of the invention will now be described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a known form of wire basket commonly fitted to the front of certain types of two-wheeled motor vehicle; Figure 2 is a rear view of an embodiment of display device according to the invention; and Figure 3 is a side view of the device shown in Figure 2, shown clipped to part of the wire basket shown in Figure 1.
Large numbers of two-wheeled motor vehicles, particularly those of relatively low engine capacity sold for use by a number of different members of a family, carry a wire basket immediately in front of the handlebars, for example of the type shown in Figure 1. The baskets are made from a welded wire construction, the wire usually subsequently being plastic coated. The wires are shown only diagrammatically in Figure 1, but in Figure 3 the wire 10 which forms the upper rim of the basket is shown to a larger scale, and it will be seen that the wires are in fact several millimetres in diameter.
According to this embodiment of the invention a display device is provided comprising a generally square plastics "L" plate 1 The plate is white but has a red letter "L" 12 printed thereon.
On the rear face of the "L" plate 11 two plastics clips 1 3 are secured by means of adhesive pads 14. Each clip has a generally Cshaped portion 1 5.
The "L" plate can be instantly attached to the front of the wire basket, without the use of tools, by merely snapping the two portions 1 5 around the wire 10, as shown in Figure 3. The clips hold the "L" plate securely in position but when it is desired to remove the "L" plate again, for example when the vehicle is to be used by a person who does not require "L" plates, the "L" plate can just as rapidly be unclipped and stowed away, for example in the basket itself.
The invention is not restricted to the details of the foregoing embodiment. For example a greater or smaller number of clips may be used, and the clips may be arranged to clip on to more than one wire of the basket.
Instead of being secured to the "L" plate 11 by means of adhesive, the clips may be formed integrally with the "L" plate, for example by means of a plastics moulding process.
It is not essential that the clips have the formation shown, in which the clips are clipped on to the wire basket by movement in a downward direction. Each clip may have two arms arranged to grip a wire between them, for example in the manner of a Terry clip, the panel for example being moved in a horizontal direction to clip it to the wire basket.
Claims (filed on 20-10-82) 1. A display device for mounting on a wire carrier basket, the display device comprising a display panel, the panel being arranged for releasable connection to the basket.
2. A display device as claimed in Claim 1, in
